Fun Weekend & Day with the Marchands

Hey Guys..

Ken...

""We are pretty sure these flowers are sassifras. We are awaiting the leaves to verify. The tips of the twigs have a pronounced lemon/citrus scent to them.""

Not Sassafras

Either a wild apple or a variant of crab apple...

A few of the blades, Joe's weng Just Like That, Orange G10 Breeden Pathfinder, Wildertools Leaf Blade and a Big Wildertool Knife.

What's the knife next to the Orange Breeden? "Just Like That?" I haven't seen that one before. Any more pic's?

Looks like you guys had a ton of fun. I can't wait to get my little ones out for some day hikes.

Great Photos

Thanks for posting those!!!!

Thanks Bill - this was a year old thread dredged up from the depths so I can't really credit anything new here ;)

Eric, I'm positive those are sassifras now having verified the stand where those shots came from. The lemon scent of broken twigs is a really positive diagnostic.

ChopChop - yes that is a Brian Breeden pathfinder knife. Its a great blade!

Hey Ken..

LMAO

Disregard.....

I see what you are talking about..
After I hit send I thought "pinkish" ? Maybe he's talking about something else, so went back and looked.. :)

Keep in mind I'm on dialup so I see part of the first picture and text First..

I need to wait a little longer before inserting foot in mouth.. :)

Thanks

Hey Rick how you like those Keen Newports? I have trouble with hitch hikers when I wear them on trail. Wish they had a mesh covering for the holes.

Remember Samuel Thayer's reference to this, apparently Ostrich ferns are sometimes confused with interupted ferns and cinnamon ferns which are distasteful. In fact, the ones I show in my picture I now know are not Ostrich ferns but one of the inedible types (oh sure you can ask me how I know ;) ). The Ostrich fern (commonly referred to as fiddleheads in this growth stage) have a grove in the inside middle of the stock, kind of like a piece of cerlery wheras the cinnamon and interupted species do not. Also the cinnamon and interrupted species have a wooly covering over them which the Ostrich fern doesn't. Sam Thayer's book (p. 78) provides an interesting reference regarding this and he even questions several edible guides which show pictures misidentifying these plants. He goes on to suggest that the few poison reports arising from consumption of ostrich forms are likely related misidentification.

I just let Normark eat stuff and watch for a reaction....

Remember this, buddy?

Fugawee... sorry bout that... it is Jack-in-the-Pulpit. Very poisonous... people and livstock have died from eating it. Your throat swells up and you DIE!

Luckily I'm smart enough to test things on my lips.. I knew it was bad a second or after I tasted it.....

It burns like military grade tear gas.. Really nasty, real prickly....

It was a stupid mistake for sure..
