Fun with Kydex and my RC-6 **PIC HEAVY**

Had some free time today so made a nice pair of pants for my RC-6...

Nobody around my neck of the woods really appreciates the time, effort, creativity and FUN that goes in making them, but I know you guys do so I thought I'd share :D

Each time I make a new sheath they get better and better looking and at this point I figure I've saved myself over $300 as I dont buy from professional makers anymore (I've made about 8 sheaths so far). I'm still not using any power tools other than a drill and dremel. I did finally pick up a heat gun that does make life a lot easier.

Was VERY happy today as my big achievement with this baby was finding a way around a teklok on my belt - I really just hate how high up tekloks make the knife ride, how close it holds it to my body and drawing it is always a bit more awkward than a sheath that rides lower down. Dont mean to bash tekloks - I love them for attaching sheaths to bags or a shoulder strap - just not my belt.

So.... I spent a few hours experimenting and making a nice belt loop that can work on any of my sheaths and put the knife riding exactly where I want it! Looking forward to making more of these belt loops and experimenting with making them even better and more modular... (Trying to figure out the best way to incorporate a ferro rod holder and "hidden" izula sheath).

I know its only a belt loop, but it really made me happy :D

Enjoy!

great work!
I got to give that a try, nice to know a nice sheeth is possible with minor tool outlay.

Good work! You guys give me more confidence to give it a try myself.

WELL DONE...Get ready for emails wanting one...If you come upon a design that is really different, maybe this one is, however I dont know that much about sheath designs, you may want to protect the designs with a patent before posting pics...as much FUN as it is sharing the pics of your fantastic sheath with us (very much appreciated), dont be surprised if someone in the "sheath-biz" is inspired by it and starts producing them. (which would be very cool on one hand and not so cool on the other...if you're considering selling the design or producing and marketing a patented, commercially available sheath yourself.

Anyways, the bottom-line is...cool sheath and thanks for sharing!

Looks good. Your imagination is the only limit to what you can do with kydex. I agree that the tek-loks seem to make the whole set up to stiff and close to your body in general. I really like a leather snap loop for the larger knives. Like this:

Hey guys - thank you all so much for the kind words - I appreciate it!!!

@shotgunner - it is REALLY addicting! We were about 30 mins late to dinner tonight because I had another sheath cooking :)

@froggy - appreciate the compliments - I dont think I would ever make em to sell - its more of a fun hobby and optimizing the knife. But I guess I should never say never... For how much the sheaths are sold by pros, its seems to be pretty lucrative considering kydex and the rivets are rather cheap. Shit, a teklok costs more than the materials to make a sheath. If I had a proper shop and powertools I bet I could knock one out in 30 minutes easy, but they still wouldnt look as good as some of the makers on here - they are real artists - David Browns designs and layering are just too damn cool - I got the "thumb lip" idea from his sheaths.

@hoopster - is that loop for IWB or just hanging on the belt?

I highly recommend those of you on the edge of giving it a shot to just jump on in - you can easily get started for less than $30 - shit you dont even need rivets really - once you drill the holes, paracord or zipties can hold the rig together given the knife aint too heavy - function over fashion!

My wife is going to be visiting her family in Wisconsin around the holidays (her father is pretty sick :() so I'm going to have A LOT of free time to fool around more - maybe I can get a few RAT Pack RC3 sheaths done in blaze orange as holiday give aways - cant wait for that blaze orange to get here!!!

Nice, but is the kydex belt loop not too stiff when seated, or riding a car?
