Whew, just got back a few hours ago from Ashokan, the big blacksmith's hammer in/conference was this weekend. What a blast! Ashokan and it's staff and volunteers was in fine form, with over 200 people over the whole 4 day event, Ashokan was running busy busy busy yet everything went smooth as a singer sewing machine! Saw our very own Justin Mercier, and a few old friends from meetings past. Got a bit roudy on Saturday night, finally put the fires out at 3:15 AM :D (gotta love it!). Did some 4 man....well technically 3 men and a lady sledging, working some 1 inch square down to 1 inch square:D (inside joke:)). Mark Aspery, David Norrie, and Peter Ross were on deck, as well as many multiple mini demos, there was always something to watch. Many of the northeast/new england area groups were all in attendance, the NEB dudes brought they're awesome portable forges which were very nice to use. Bladesmith or blacksmith alike, it is surely not a event to be missed.

Here is a shot of Tim Miller forging some 1" square, thanks to Brendan McCullough for the photo! (that's me on the right)

Pathetic !!! And here I thought Ashokan was for serious blademakers.

Mete,... Sam has a warped idea of fun... :(

A guy with a sword, is just a guy saying,... "Don't look at my penis." LOL :D

Working a piece of one inch square stock by hand is no big deal. Any 120 pound shrimp should be able to do it. It's more a matter of brains than brawn.

But, if your hat size is greater than your I.Q., forget it!

You work it from the corners rather than from the flats, with a hammer that has a small face and about 4 pounds of weight behind it. Decrease the surface area of contact for easier penetration and flow. It’s not how big it is, it’s how you use it! HA HA HA LOL :D

... just kindergarten bladesmithing...

Sorry I missed the $hits and giggles! :(

Tai, what the frig are you talking about? Where did you get anything about swords? It wasn't any kind of pissing match like you like, it was just a bit of honest fun nothing serious, but *thanks* for the tips on working large diameter bar(?). Wasn't even making a blade........but sorry it wasn't up to your high horse er I mean high standards of forging expertise.

Hehe Robert, this was the BLACKSMITH's conference, not the bladesmith's (those bladesmith guys are too serious anyway:D).

Thanks (I think) Justin for posting the video hehehehe, missed the snowstorm though :D.
