it was a nice day on 02-16-08 and i wasa ble to get out for a bit. checked some old pine trees for some fat wood. i found that the sides of the tree that get lots of sun light seemed not to have any good fat wood. just dry sun dried rot, but to start thats what your looking for i limb that has broke off about a year or more ago. when get F W for fun i use a chopper, but for survival you might want to use a saw to consevere the wood.

this is the fire starters i made for my son and nephews. they are large to help save little fingers. you can make them the size you like. Once you get your fat wood you paton it into squares to start your shapeing.

Ohhhh!! So you cheated, right? :D :D Cotton provides instant gratification.. that's for sure. I am sure that if you tried getting a few thinner shavings of fat wood you could get them to catch your sparks from the ferro rods.
So far I have tried it out with fatwood, bark shavings and dried grass... and it takes a few trys but it works!
I am sure those kids are going to have a lot of fun with those fire starters. Great job!

Nice pics! I think you've inspired me. I came across this old stump a couple of weeks ago. I may have to try something like that.
