i was watching that show last night where that bear guy gets air dropped into kenya and the crew follows him to see how he gets out of it. he drinks the juice out of a fresh elephant dropping and cuts a lion killed zebra open to eat raw meat. when he pulls his knife out i'm all eyes trying to see what sorta blade this dude is packing. its a gerber full sized gator! wow i was thinking it was going to be some fancy hard core folder. later he sleeps in a cave and lashes it to a stick for a weapon. he used it a few times during the show for his needs. i was thinking how a lot of people just use any knife that works and they aren't all that into it like we are.

No way would I be caught drinking Elephant dung juice with a Gerber in my pocket.

Actually, the Gerber Gator is not that bad of a knife, especially the older USA made ones. I know somebody who has one, and the handle is comfortable, and the lock-up is solid. He paid less than $15 on clearance at Wal-Mart for his, they were replacing them with an updated version or something. Not my fort`e, but not a bad knife.

FYI, you were watching Man vs Wild on Discovery Channel. Fun show to watch. He is notorious for using common knives. IIRC, he used a COld Steel Voyager in one episode and and SAK (OH Trekker IIRC) in another.

theres nothing wrong with using what will work. some of my best knives i never use for anything just because they cost so much and i just like to collect knives.

Man vs. Wild is a pretty cool show. I have an old Gerber Gator that I just stashed away somewhere because I considered it to be junk compared to the knives I collect now. It's cool to see he's using it on the show. It's funny how many of use are always looking for the strongest and best bulit knives, but in most situations a cheap $20 knife, like a Gerber Gator, will perform fine for a lot of tasks.

I would like to see Bear with some kind of large knife, like a Swamp Rat Battle Rat, or that new Ka-Bar 14 1/4 Bowie, and do some serious batoning, etc.

Agreed - it is funny how we "collect", but when it comes to beating one up, we will use something cheap (less expensive.....). I also have one of the older Gerber Gators and an EZ-Out and have beat the crap out of them in yarwork(Heaven forbid I dig with my Endura:) - my Buck/Strider likes it:) ) and they are still ticking. I worked my Delica 3 pretty hard and when I got my Delica 4's (I'm up to 5 now - just got a BRG/ZDP one:D ), and the intent was to use one just to abuse, but I haven't done that....

Make sure you avoid the new Victorinox Alpineer. Cheap, LIGHT, THIN, and now an EDC over all the other stuff I have. Food prep, slicing, just about anything. I almost embarass MYSELF. I still have a smaller BM in my pocket, but the Alpineer is now "first user."

The Gator does come in ATS-34 and 420HC models and the handle looks pretty filling and grippy. I don't really like the knife, but it seems pretty practical to me. I think there are much much worse choices for an outdoors knife.

I have a older gerber gator that lives in my jet ski. it comes in handy on many ocasions. big rubber handle great in water and blood. never a sign of rust and we even wander out into the ocean at times. the sebbie stays home.

You think?

Actually, over decades I have known many, many people who carry and/or use knives seriously, but haven't met more than 3 or 4 who were actually interested in the subject. For most of the world, a knife is like any other commonly used tools in that usually only their makers or marketers really care about the details. The rest of are more about the use, which included me until only a few years ago.

I got involved with knives and knifecraft while doing product research on the internet. In the process, I learned what I needed to know and more, staying on when I found the subject itself worth exploring. But even now, I still don't know, among people in my life, even one who shares my interest. All my contacts with suchlike are online.

IMHO, it seems Knife Knuts are way few in number.

haha, try being a 19 year old girl that loves knives and guns and see how many of your friends think you are weird.

When I was in the Army over 10 years ago the Gerber Gator was one of the most popular knives among soldiers. At the time most soldiers who had a knife had a Gerber Gator, Gerber Multipier, Endura with plastic molded clip, or a Leatherman PST.
