Funny e-mail from my wife

I have to tell you I think most rap is crap . There is too much anger expressed . It is also that the rhythm (or beat ) is not smooth with abrupt changes . I do think it is a valid form of music . I just do not agree with most of the content .
I do think that the change from artist to assemblyman has a great deal with how we see ourselves . I grew up in an area that was built to entice artists and craftsman to emigrate . Beautiful cut glass windows , stained glass, wonderful oak half wall paneling with chair rails and nice plasterwork around light fixtures. Families ate together , listened to each other and musical instruments in the home were more prevalent . There was a time when heel and toe tapping was an art .Spoons were for more than eating and a violin was a guaranteed party starter .
I do think that the profusion of radio stations with the accompanying boom boxes has something to do with it as well . Why bother to learn to make music when your black box is your instrument and will blast forth to the heavens with the flick of a switch .

Anger is a real emotion and the anger in rap is normally real. Actually today I don't like the new rap. Its all about money and cars and jewelry. No anger anymore. When it was angry it was good. Some of the lyrics give you great insight into urban ghetto culture too. I've always taken issue with this line which I believe speaks volumes about the culture. Think of New Orleans after reading it.

"______ flipping burgers
I DESERVE a
9-5 I can be proud of
that I can speak loud of
to try to help a ______ get out of
yo, the concrete playground
but most __________ only want you to stay down."

See what I mean. Deserve. I had to flip burgers to get through college, but its not good enough for him (Dr. Dre by the way). He deserves that job because of how he has been oppressed. I think the idea is bull, but the line is as straight to the heart of the issue as you can get. And this idea is basically the entire problem in New Orleans. People often overlook rap because of the content, but that's exactly why I like it.

That said. I like Kenny Rogers, Billie Holiday, Waylon Jennings, Led Zepplin, etc too. I'm all over the place.

Actually Zep,s "Hangman" is an old Western tune . You can hear it sung in the "Fighting Kentuckian " with John Wayne . So Waylon isn,t that far a stretch from Zep.

I agree Anger expressed is better than anger repressed . In this case it just isn,t musical to me . There are many stirring warlike tunes that I like without liking the sentiment behind it . It is not the message it is the way it is delivered .

To each his own .

I don,t think it is that we cannot .
It is more we don,t allow ourselves that freedom .
