Hey guys,

Today I finally recieved my first Esee knife a RC4 (to be exactley a RAT knife since there still is the Rat logo on the blade :D). When I unpacked the knife I had this strange odor in my nose. The micarta slabs seem to be the source. This smell reminds me of my organic chemistry practical courses but I can't connect the smell to a certain substance. So I wonder what kind of chemical is used in the micarta that causes this odor. Does anybody know something about it? Is it harmless?

Besides this the knife seems to be what I expected it to be: awesome ;)

Cheers,
J5

to many folks sniffing the product ,I remember when KSF SS leather sheath for ESEE knives came out and everybody said they smelled like donuts :D

Whatever it is they put on the handles, be careful, it's adddictive.

The more you sniff it, the greater the urge to buy more Esee's!

It will probably wear out or smell out or sth like that. Or you can jsut wash 'em, that should do the trick

Yes thats the smell that gets you to buy more. An't in great !:D

Welcome to the forum.

It's like the smell of a new car. I woul'd say it is harmless, because i will make you buy more. It will probably do some harm to your wallet.

But beside that, your just fine.

Not to worry, my E3 MIL was the same way. I got it last week and it smelled really bad, like yours I am sure, a burnt type of smell off the canvas micarta. I wiped the scales with Windex, left it on the counter overnight and the next day was much better. The third day it was scene free.

Good choice on the RC4 tan, welcome to the forums & enjoy on of the best knives being made today.

My RC4 and 6 never had a smell. But when I got the Izula handles it was just a really strong smell.

It usually involved "Wow that's awful" *Sniff again* "Wow that's awful" *Sniff again*

Smells terrible but you keep sniffing it.

It's like the smell of a new car.

I was going to say the same...;)
So thank you all for your comments. Unfortunately I can't afford another addiction. I already dig way too much knife companies - like BM or Fallkniven...hmm but maybe I can make an exception this time :). Especially because of the upcoming Izula II :D

It is just the resin used to make the micarta "out gassing"... it's been in that plastic bag for a while and the "gas" couldn't escape.

I bet it will go away real soon.

Welcome to ESEE......... :)

Interestingly, if only comes from the canvas micarta. Not the linen. Or at least that has been the case with my ESEE's.

I guess i shouldnt have smelled anything, bought the 6 then the Izula, waiting on the 3 and 4 . Just went Gold member because this forum is ROCKIN, so i guess i will also have the arrowhead, lovin it, thanks so much and totally cant wait to keep up the adventure and also chat and perhaps meet some of the folks here on the forum.....

My RC 3 didn't smell that I remember :p (though I got it used so maybe it didn't include "the smell" ) but I wonder if the used RC 4 with canvas micarta, that is on the way, will come with "the smell".
Hmmmmm, I gonna email the owner to see if he included it!! :D
