Funny smell of the micarta handles of a RC4 desert tan

My 4 didn't stink, but I remember that izzy 10k had a bit of an oily smell.

Since I've been using it to cook at school it is now has a lovely garlic fragrance :D
 
I just got a new ESEE 4 in DT. No smell from the handles. It has the ESEE logo, so it is the newer production. I am not sure I would have notice since I was so impressed with the feel on the knife. I understand the addiction now. I have a Izula, HEST, 5, 6 and Lite Machete and each time you get one and hold it is just damn impressive. The 4: great grip (for my hands) nice balance, perfect size for so many things, razor sharp out of the box and I all could think was damn why did I not get this sooner. My thought was "damn no wonder people think this is a perfect bushcraft knife". The ESEE are so adictive because they are just so damn good. They surpass your expectations each time. I can't wait to use it. I hope the smell on yours disappears quickly and you enjoy using it.

So I wonder what kind of chemical is used in the micarta that causes this odor. Does anybody know something about it? Is it harmless?

Besides this the knife seems to be what I expected it to be: awesome ;)

No the smell is far from harmless. It has been linked to several different health problems. Not the least of them is emptyasswalletitis and in some cases the dreaded mywifepitchedbitchus. to avoid these and many other problems you should pack that RC4 up and send it to me for proper disposal, trust me I already suffer from both these terrible maladies so there is no danger of me contracting them. If you will send the knife to me I will gladly take one for the team and you will never be troubled with the danger of either of these highly contagious diseases. For the love of God man think of the children. I will also volunteer my disposal service to any of my fellow RAT packers. so please pm me for my address. :p

Just when I thought I had heard it all about the multitudes of uses for a ESEE knife, and here someone is trying to huff one:D
