I've been an amateur radio operator for years (14) and the old pharts in that hobby sound just like the ones in this hobby!

Instead of saying you HAVE TO KNOW MORSE CODE to be a real ham radio operator, some think you HAVE TO GRIND FREEHAND to be a real knife maker...

Nothing more to really say, but I have found the griping and complaining to be a bit comical...

For the record, the few blades I have made by hand have been done both ways... Jig AND freehand... Both worked well for me.

I may get BANNED for this comment, but I thought folks should know that the "code/no code", or "free hand/use a jig" debate is within every hobby...

Hmph! Suppose you code with a bug too.. :grumpy:

:D Just kiddin'

For show at Field Day I have used a bug, paddles, straight key, and even 2 hose clamps attached to my fingers with wires attached to them to make the contact.

As for enough experience, yep, I'm sure it will come to me then. Actually the last few "from scratch" blades I made WERE freehand.

I just wanted to let the new guys know that this type of controversy is EVERYWHERE and in ALL hobbies, not just this one.

Now, old the old guys, go back to the belts, new folks, take a breath and get back to design mode.

p.s., I'm a bit out spoken, any slams, flames, comments about mom, etc. need to come in a PM. This is not the venue for that. LOL

I have a close friend that makes traditional longbows, one of wich I recently started shooting, Anyway from what he says there is a similar bebate in that hobby as well. Dr. Grip I see your point. I have also climbed a few 14ers. Debate rages in that hobby as well, depending on how many feet you climbed and how many hundreds of feet between connecting saddles.
I guess in anything you undertake there are the super lagalistic type, the pretty traditional type, and the whatever works type. Everyone maybe right but I hope that we all enjoy grinding steel or hitting it with a hammer or whatever you do to get there.
There is only one thing that is truly exclusive anyway.
