For the past 15 or so years i have used a flat ceramic looking tile that my x father in law gave me when he worked in an industrial plant and he said it was some type of lining for industrial furnaces. He was supposed to give me another one but my ex wife found a sharper knife or a longer blade! Whatever the case i never got my spare so i leave this one at home at all times as it will put a mirror finish on any steel that will darn near cut you to look at it. doesnt matter if the blade is mirror finished when you are done sharpening on this the edge will stand out as a super shiny thin line! This smoothness of the blade gives it the ability to shave facial hair as well as a straight razor. I have used it on 1095,1085,420,440a,440c,aus8a,aus6,ats34,ats55,154cm and several other steels and it never has failed to polish the edge to razor sharpness it doesnt seem to digest any of the oil when i use it on the stone either and sometimes i will use it dry and wash it with detergent after a session. But it would be great if i could have obtained another one of these for my camp gear. One things for sure though, this one will never leave the house!

Well, If I recall correctly, those "fire brick" pieces have a high chromium and aluminum oxide content. So, they should be good ceramic block sharpeners.

Might have to check out a boiler/furnace repair shop and give it a try.

That makes sense. I once worked for lumber mill and they had some fire bricks replaced. The guys doing the work would cut the bricks on a tile saw. I once picked up one of these cut pieces and said to myself, "this looks like something you could sharpen a knife blade on". Then I droped it back on the ground. Dogh!

While I've not tried one myself, I have it on good authority that the ceramic tiles used by NASA on the space shuttle will also produce a great blade edge.
