Future of Crucible steels...

We are all aware that Crucible is on the way out... which is bad news as they have offered some very nice steels and the knife industry have really made a meal of them. CPM S30V, CPM S90V, CPM 154, CPM D2.....

I'm willing to wager everyone here has at least one knife made from these steels. I for one am a BIG fan of S30V among others.....

My question is, do the formulas for these steels have to disappear with the company? What happens if they close up shop? Is that the end of S30V for all time?

I think you're throwing dirt on an empty casket.....

Talked with a distributor a week ago....there are others waiting in line according to him to use the recipies and CPM process. Kinda reminds me of vultures in a tree waiting on a possum to die so they can feast on him! One company was specifically mentioned, but I had never heard their name, and I was cautioned the product will be $$$ if and when it hits the market.

Which of the Crucible steels was the one used for auto engine valves?

Well many of the materials that Crucible sell can be found from competitors like LaTrobe Speciality Steel and Carpenter. Since the constituents of any material that Crucible sell are known, you could custom order those materials from one of their competitors. If you want small quantities get together and group buy.

That is assuming the worst and Crucible cease to be which isnt an assured outcome.

The issue is that Crucible sells small quantities direct to knifemakers, but the other companies don't. Crucible will be missed.

I think the difference with the Crucible CPM products are not the constituent parts, but the process. Now if they patent has run on the process, that is another story. All you would need would be the "recipe"......oh and the millions of dollars worth of specialized equipment.:D

Other mills will do vacuum refining for powdered metals and the like. Mills will even do a special order process, such as requesting a tool steel to be double vacuum refined. I do realise the issue of small quantity orders will cause us all grief but there is workarounds for that - I dont see it as being a total blocker more a hassle.

I heard talk of someone buying out the specialized steel division (knife steels & exotics).
