Future of the Cobra Hood?

I did not like the Cobra hood at first, but I've been playing with my ATR and now have come to REALLY like it. I think it makes opening the knife easier, more comfortable, reliable, not to mention it makes a handy dandy thumbrest. I'd like to see the Cobra hood on more Spyderco models, especially on the next, hopefully flat-ground Delica :D I notice that there is a small screwhead visible near the top of the hood. This leads me to think that the hood is removable. If I am correct in this opinion why not make the Cobra hood standard issue on most knives and those that don't like them can simply remove it from their knife?? Just an idea any thoughts about it?? :)

I's like to be able to retrofit the CH on a couple of Spydies. I like it. Works really well for me.

I liked the concept when I first heard about it. I still don't have a Spyderco with one, but when I handled a friend's ATR, I really dug it. I'd definitely like to see it on other Spydercos--like the long-awaited BISON.

I don't know about the ATR, but the Ti Salsa has a cut-out in the blade spine that the hood fits into. So if you took the hood off you'd have an ugly divot in the spine with square edges that would presumably be uncomfortable for the thumb. Even without a divot you'd have a screw-hole. In keeping with good Spyderco design the hood is not simply an add-on, it's incorporated into the overall design of the knife. Oh, and I am a big fan of the hood on my Salsa.

Interesting. Did you all like the hood immediately or did it have to grow on you? I was going to get a Ti Salsa until I handled a regular. I didn't like it at all. Everything about it (including the hood) except the blade looked and felt cheap. Is the Ti version that much different? Don't get me wrong. In general, I love Spyderco knives and have never before been disappointed. The blade is great, but the Salsa handle just doesn't work for me and the hood felt awkward. I would take a plain, oversized opening hole any day.

The cobra hood is neat, but I like it mainly because it gives me a nice thumb rest.

I hate it. Can't stand the looks, and in my opinion it's quite useless. the hole itself works great, no need to add a hood. You might as well add an thumbstud, just in case

I didn't like the hood. I found it ugly and useless. This oppinion radically changed when I got a Salsa. In the spirit of this experience, I advice everyone to try the hood first. Spyderco really makes great products.

I have a ti Salsa with the hood and liked it from the git-go. I would like to see it offered on other spydies myself. I would like to see it on some other folders that are not spydies. But only if the correct steps were taken to use it, i.e. any trademarks or patents.

I have an aluminum Salsa and I like the hood. I thought it looked really ugly in photos but it has grown on me. Overall, I really like my Salsa. I can only assume I would be even more pleased with the titanium version.

I originally had a black aluminum Salsa. I liked the look and the ergos, but as you said it felt kind of "cheap"; it seemed too light and I didn't like the blade steel. Sold it. Got a good deal on a Ti a few months later. Love it. Nice and beefy. It's my snub-nosed Sebenza.

I hate it. The only additional function this damn thing provides is to catch the edge of the pocket and open the blade in your pocket.

I'll second that stopped carrying my TI Salsa because of it :(

I have a Ti ATR from the passaround and it is my first time with the Cobra Hood. I thought it was rather ugly at first but it has grown on me. I like it as a thumb rest, and it does help some in the opening of the knife.

i can relate, have had this happen to me (ATR) and its most disconcerting to have your knife open up (even just a little bit) in your pocket.........really like the way it 'feels' on the knife, but (and thats a big but .....) if it does cause the blade to open like that, not a good thing imho

exactly. what's the point of fast&easy opening if you have to be slow and careful when drawing the knife out of your pocket?

I've heard this before, about the Cobra Hood causing the knife to open in your pocket. It's never been a problem for me...maybe I'm not wearing my pants tight enough, I'll have to ask around.

I agree strongly with Ireed. My Salsa opened in my pocket twice (fortunately, not too much damage to my fingers either time), and that's why I got rid of it...

I've never had a problem with my Salsa "waving" open. I wear khakis and cargos (a bit loose but not baggy) and usually keep my knife clipped to my back pocket.

Thats what I keep hearing about the hood, I think I'll pass
