Future of the Dragonfly?

Sal,

With the flury of posts asking about smaller this and better steel that, are there any plans to change the Dragonfly offerings? I really like the Zytel model (over the Stainless) but can't help to think it'd be an even sweeter little knife with something like VG-10 or ATS-55 (or even 440v!).

Any plans?

Jon

I thought the Dragonflys were now offered with ATS-55.

The stainless steel Dragonfly uses ATS-55, as did the carbon fiber model, but the online catalog shows the lightweight Dragonfly as still using AUS-8.

Guess I should've clarified that. The lightweight (AUS-8) model is the one I was talking about.

I really, really like this little knife. It works and feels like it's much bigger and is just so darn handy. No matter what big tactical type folder I have when I have to cut something I always reach into my pocket and grab this one.

I dunno about the steel upgrade... I like my ltwght Dragonfly just fine as is, esp for travel. I'm as intrigued by the arrival of better steels as anyone, but I'm not convinced that *all* models necessarily benefit from such changes. VG-10 is, by all accounts, a welcome upgrade in the Calypso, but in the Dfly?

The current AUS8 takes a *very* fine edge and very satisfactorily "gets the job done" for the Dfly, least for my uses. I can't recall thinking, "this would be much easier if only the Dfly had a better steel..."

Ghecko, have you experienced shortcomings which a better steel would address? Would the "upgrade" in price be worth it? Curious...

Actually I'm pretty happy with AUS-8. It's great for push cutting and isn't too hard to get hair popping sharp.

The academic side of me knows that by picking the lightweight over the stainless (or CF) I'm giving up some edge retention. If ATS-55 is the equal of ATS-34 (and I'm sure it is) then it's been proven many times that when AUS-8 craps out ATS-34 keeps going.

I can't answer the cost question as I don't know what ATS-55 or VG-10 (or AUS-10?) would add to the lightweight. I paid full retail for mine and feel that I got a good deal.

My question for Sal was whether or not they were planning any changes, it wasn't an outright request for better steel. I didn't start this thread to drum up support - I just wanted to know if Spyderco had anything in the pipe for my favorite small folder.

Just thought I'd chime in and ring the bell for the Dragonfly. I've got the stainless handled version with ATS-55 blade. Like you, Ghecko, I often reach for the little Dragonfly instead of the Military or other larger folder I might be carrying. It is my daily companion at school where it is small and cute enough not to be threatening or controversial but plenty big enough for the cutting jobs I find for it. Holds an edge pretty well, although I touch it up pretty regularly.

Sal, don't they have the same blade? It would then be quite easy to change to ATS-55, right? Why does the other model have ATS-55 and the zytel-model only AUS-8? How much more would the price be if you started using the same steel (ATS-55) on both models?
A small knife like this would definately benefit from good steel. It's a kind of knife that many people would carry and therefore use on everything. Please consider ATS-55 for it.

Hugo.
