Ok, so me and my son (13) have been working alot on fire lately. He's getting pretty good with a firesteel and lighting a PJ cotton ball to start the fire. He then stacks up his fuzzsticks and has a pretty good fire going.
My question: Do any of y'all have success in lighting the fuzzstick (fatwood) with the firesteel? Or do y'all always have some sort of charcloth or cottonball to catch the spark?
Our next project is the bow drill for fire...but I really suck at it, so we'll both be learning. :)

My initial lighting is almost always done with a firesteel on some fuzzed-up fatwood. just shave off some dust and fire away. It will probably take several strikes though, depending on the fine-ness of you dust.

Hey bro.

If the wood you're fuzzing is really dry and you're curls are extremely thin and small; you can get the fuzz stick to light with a firesteel.

I know Brian Andrews had a video at one time showing it.

I'll try to find it.

I use the misch metal firestarters and I easily light up small slivers of wood. :)

Very cool!
Damn thats a helluva fuzzstick!
Ok, guess we have a new project for this weekend.
We've been trying to create too much sparks I think and they don't catch.
I guess we just need to practice more, we've been taking the easy way out.
I did give my son and his buddy both a firesteel kit a couple weeks ago. Last time we went camping the both made their own little fire with rocks around it. Kinda cool that they figured out that they could live without their Ipods.
Thanks for the video link Tony!!!!!!!

Here's a bad picture of their success:

I'll try to ask a little less dumb question next time.
