You should do a search for more info, I know there have been post about this, but the basic gist is that this is hazardous stuff to work with unless you take FULL safety measures. you might be able to get a way with light sanding without trouble, but any heavy stuff and you will have big problems.
Use a respirator, that dust is nasty. trust me and dont ask why Wear a respirator. 120 grit sandpaper and files take it down pretty fast, then go to 220, and 320 for a nice grippy finish. if you want it darker looking, wet it down with water or WD-40.
