G-10 on a traditional slipjoint?

For a long time now I have been admiring the black G-10 knives that Case put out. Particularly the medium stockman and the awesome barehead slimline trapper. There is something about that black G-10 that says to me modern elegance.

Having gotten rid of all my tactical knives after getting seduced by traditional slipjoints, I do recall the black G-10 on a Benchmade Mini-Dejavoo that was so nice.

Is it bad taste to get one of these instead of a bone or stag on a traditional slipjpoint knife? I would hope I could get an exception given that delrin is popular on some traditional knives and I see several custom ones in micarta as well.

Lastly, do any other traditional production slipjoint makers other than Case produce sliptjoints with G-10 handles?

IIRC I've seen pics of some custom slip joints that had G-10 scales...
Nothing wrong with it if thats what you like. Doesn't have the warmth or character IMO, but it is durable.

As Mike said...it's your knife, get what you like.

Micarta is also very durable (and the paper version can be jigged to look similar to bone) and might be a better choice if you want to maintain the "traditional" look.

I just imagine in my head, some day in years past, to old codgers sitting around a cracker barrel in a store, and one saying to the other...."DELRIN...they want to put delrin on a pocket knife instead of bone!!!!!

:D

Let's just say that as far as synthetic handles go, G10 is in much better taste than some of the old "Mother of Toilet Seat" acetate. The G10 knives from Case also have ground blades instead of polished. It's a very good looking combination.

I have a couple of traditional patterns in carbon fiber which I guess is somewhat similar to G10. I like'um.
G10 is the stag of the 21st century whereas carbon fiber is the ivory of the 21st century. You old geezers need to get with it. It's a new day. The times they are a changin' ;)

I have a GEC Jack in "Northern Lights" Acrylic

So for sure you can get a Case in black G-10

For some reason, that just gave me a mental picture of a pith helmeted poacher attacking a grounded airplane with a pry-bar. Something must be done before these noble giants of the sky are hunted to extinction.

The 48 Pattern Case in Black G10, is one of the best ideas Case has had in a long time...

I have one, really like it..... Go ahead take the leap.....

Saddlehorn and sodbuster by Mike Tison, the puppy on the bottom is by Joel Chamblin. All are in pre-ban, legally taken, farm raised, free range carbon fiber.
Get that G10 Case, texasflyfisher, and don't look back.

I don't have any problem with G10 on traditional patterns - even in hunter orange (but please, not pink, ugh). Considering some of the abominations they came up with for cel handles way back -- and as artmichalek mentioned, the "Mother of Toilet Seat" acetate makes G10 seem the absolute height of conservative taste (but this would be true for just about anything compared to that horror).

One should always get the knife one likes, regardless of faceless forum members' opinions. Besides, look at all the tastes that are represented here. I don't think there's a "wrong" way to collect knives, as long as it doesn't impact your ability to provide for your family. ;)

The last knife I bought was a SAK, but it had a one-hand opening feature and super-duper, high tech handle materials (the Vic "New Soldier"). And (gasp) stainless blades! Do I have to give up my membership in the Traditional forum? Nah... Does anyone think less of me here? (Is that possible? :D) Do I care?

Here's my Case 48 Black G10 as ground stainless blade. I really like it,and stainless blades cut what I need cut. Get'em sharpe then strop them, works for me.....

I didn't know they made a 48 in G-10..Nice to see them keeping the pattern alive

Just wish Case would come out with G-10 with CV blades.

Mike

You would think if this a work knife, it would be offered in CV like the yeller handled knives. I would like to see that.

Thank y'all for the responses! There are so many natural handles available for the 18 pattern that if I can't settle on one of those, I may take the plunge on the G-10 version.

One more response!

I've been looking at the G-10 moose as well as the slimline trapper.

I have a Case Ruger canoe in red G-10 and it is one of my favorite EDCs.

CV would be nice but SS really compliments the G-10's durablity.

What I'd really like is SS pins & liners to go with those black grips!

I've got a pair of Case Large Trappers in both the Orange and Black G-10. I think the black in particular looks very classy, truly traditional or not. If you like the looks of the G-10 Stockman, I say go for it!

Except that Case's "Working Knives" series is comprised of knives with stainless blades and brown Delrin handles. And in general (in my experience with 3 of them) the blades aren't as finely finished as in their regular product lines. (Not as polished or smooth along the spine, etc.) But I'm just being pedantic: I know you meant "working knife" as opposed to "Working Knives(tm)".
