G-10 + tight clip = destroyed jeans pocket?

It takes only a couple of minutes to remove the clip, sand the G10, and re-install the clip. I will also tweak it slightly as necessary. You can see the smoothed out G10 on these Cold Steel puppies. Its really not so obvious when you see the knives in person:

Yet another reason I love my Acies, the Titanium is nice and smooth and carries well with my jeans and khakis. I'm a big fan of the original Spyderco Manix C95 (wonderful knife) and I still use it but it wore out more right front jean pockets than I care to remember.....starts getting pricey after a while even if you usually wear Levis (not the watered down discount store versions of Levis...not sure what they're called).

Best solution yet is to shitcan the miserable pocket clip and use something like a Benchmade soft sheath for
daily carry, Your knife is almost impossible to lose, nobody knows what you are carrying, and your pants
pocket is unmolested.

"Paint" a little clear finger nail polish under the clip. When it dries it will leave a smooth surface. I've never done this myself, but I have read where others have and they say it works quite well. YMMV.

this is a huge problem for me because i like nice jeans. i can't justify shredding the pocket of a pair of pants that are just as expensive as a good knife. so i just throw it in the pocket instead of clipping it.

I can relate I am currently wearing kicking mule workshop 1950 awa's (more than a strider) so I had to bend the clip a little. It is still tight, but it comes out no problem now.

I don't like bending spring steel once it has already taken a set. I use a thin brass shim of about .015".. I put it between the clip and G-10. I start with a very thin file( an old spark plug file works great). Then I follow up with descending grits of emery cloth folded in half. It takes a little more time but the results are worth it.

Do You need to take the clip off to sand it?

Nope, just place a piece of sandpaper under the clip, rough side to the G-10 and work it back and forth a bit. Let the tension of the clip apply the pressure. It will also just smooth the area that the clip touches, this way no "excess" material is removed. I prefer a tight clip, sanded smooth so it stays, but is "smooth" on the draw. When the knife does wear on my pocket, it is at the top edge (6-7 yr old work jeans) and none occurs at the tension point. No wear at all in my work uniform pants.

I find it amusing that some choose to remove scale material as opposed to tensioning the clip. Same basic theory, increase the gap between clip and the scale. To each their own.

One the one hand bending the clip doesn't alter the knife. On the other, if you have to apply too much force then you run the risk of stripping out the screw threads or even snapping the clip. I snapped the clip on a knife once trying to adjust it. It was one of those with a designer clip with circles cut out of it, which had the undesirable effect of making it effectively about as thin as a pen clip. Snap! But you can't really judge how much it's been bent if you remove it before bending, so you almost have to do it with the clip still attached.

Given the choice I would rather sand a little than risk blowing out the thread and having to do major repairs.

Wow. Just wow.

I assume you don't change your oil while wearing those jeans? :D And yes, I do realize that I sound exactly like a non-knife guy saying "What do you need a $400 knife for?":highly_amused:

Ya, I hear you. The darned things cost more than most of the cars I have owned!

When it comes to clipped-knives and pocket damage, you can run but you can't hide, imo. No matter what the knife or britches, my pockets always end up looking like a rodent has been chewing on 'em... :/

I haven't had a problem with G10 scales tearing up pockets (none of mine don't have especially coarse texturing), but I did ultimately stop carrying my Kershaw Blur for that reason. The TracTec inserts cause a lot of damage to your pocket. I really like the Blur (it's one of my favorite knives), but it was just causing too much damage too quickly for me to be able to EDC it.

There's a big difference, though. Smoothing out the G10 gives you two smooth surfaces - one is the G10 and the other is the clip. Merely bending the clip, without smoothing the G10, does not produce the same result. The primary problem with Cold Steel G10, for example, is that its so incredibly grippy that it can eat denim. The clip tension is not the prob. JMO.
