I am looking into getting a G.E.C. knife but 1095 doesn't interest me because I only like stainless steel. If you have any of GEC's offerings in 440 C could you tell me your impressions? How does it cut, sharpen, etc. Is it comparable to Buck 420 HC? If you don't like stainless steel in general and only like 1095 please don't bother to post; I'm only interested in the opinions of stainless steel users. Thank you.

Stelth, 440C is good stainless steel and many custom makers I know still think it's one of the best.

It holds a good edge but can be some work to sharpen depending on the hardness/heat treat and the initial angle of the bevels. (Diamond hones are your friend here.)

I've not worked with GEC's 440C but have no doubt that they give their steel a good heat treat.

uh, nice reading
the 1095 on my gecs sharpens easily to a scary edge and holds well, may rethink about their 440C  and try one

Say thanks to Dennis as well. He gave me the knife to test.

The stainless GECs,acorn shield, squirrel etch, have all arrived at my door murderously sharp! The same is not always true of heir carbons though.....

i bought a gec in 440c that was discounted by latham as a edc. it took a feroious edge & did'nt seem brittle . that knife went to knarfeng for testing since he is a production engineer with lab access to rockwell machine & other test equipment. the man sets the same bevels of = sharp & counts cuts on sisal rope to test edge durability between various knives in the same steel & also tests knives in different alloys from the same company to give us an idea as to effieiceny of different alloys in similar knives of one company. i had tested gec 1095 against queen d2 & the tuff d2 shades the gec 1095 by only a small margin. extrapolation between queens d2 & gec may show that the gec 440 is fairly close to in performance. this is my opinion since knarfeng [to my knowledge] has'nt tabulated this info. the foregoing has my conjecture but knarfeng tests showed the gec 440c to be a better cutter than the gec 1095. however i carry the gec 1095 since i like the patina carbon steels achive with use.

Thanks for all who have posted. Due to this information my next purchase will be a GEC in 440c. I'll post pics when I get it early next month.

wow, the pictures in that thread really make me realize the monstrous size of those GECs, and I thought the 110 were monsters!

It's only the #23 Pioneer that is that size. GEC makes a whole bunch of different sized models.

I wish they would replace the spey with a Wharncliffe or Sheepsfoot on a #73

I'm probably going to get a no. 25 with the wharncliffe blade. Does anyone have one of those?

I have tried both 1095 and 440C from GEC and I much prefer 1095. Their 440C was a pain to sharpen and it wouldn't take the type of edge the 1095 would. Keep in mind I'm no mater sharpener by any standards but I can get most steels, even exotics hairpopping sharp.
