I was checking out a G.I. Style Jungle Hammock they had in a "Cheaper Than Dirt!" catalog for $20.00 and I was wondering if anybody has experience with it. If it's decent I would love to order it, or maybe somthing else depending on what you guys say. I need a shelter system for backpacking by spring. I am looking for something with mosquito protection. Recommendations?

Look's like this:

For 20 bucks it sounds like a good idea to try it out. You can always upgrade to a better hammock if you like it.

That's what I was thinking too Tony. Kismet, is this setup (this hammock + tarp) comparable in weight and bulk to a cheap 1 person tent?

This item takes up a lot of space, it is heavy and a compression sack won't help either.
mine got soaked in a down pour and it took 3 days to dry and it was 100 lbs when wet.

Comparable? Yes, but a toothpick can be compared to a tree. With all due respect to contrary opinions, this hammock, and most others, are not for me. This one is heavy, and all others are more problematic for ME, than any benefit they offer.

If you are on tight budget, know how to seal seams, look into the Wenzel (sp?) one person at...er...Campmor. $29. I'm still amazed at how it stood up to gale winds one summer. Seriously, BIBLICAL winds. Sealed, fine with heavy rain. Tent style, adequate/ample room, 3 pounds. Packs small enough.

I've gone the bivy route, and the Wenzel has much more sense of space. Makes a difference if you are tent-bound for a while.
