I'm not a jewelry guy. I've never worn a watch either. I bought the cheapest Casio G-Shock watch I could find to help me time the heat treats. I found myself wearing it all the time now.

Mine is analog with digital readout, stopwatch, and countdown timer. I can't figure out how to choose a model with more features. Solar, a compas, the mudman. The whole thing is confusing. I'd like someone to educate me. Do they make these backlit? I don't like the light. My hands aren't GITD, and I don't know if this exsists also.

I might be talked into trading for a good one and allowing a custom order in return too.

I've got three. One is the rescue version, shows the moon (full, waxing, waning, etc.) and the tide for your area if your by the coast. It is waterproof to way deeper than I would ever go. I also have a tidegraph one in tan that I am fond of, looks nice without being to flashy, it also has the tide/moon features and some others. And I also have one of the basic models. They will be backlit but only if you push the button to illuminate the light, not all the time. Part of the reason I like the tidegraph is because the background is black with white numbers if that makes sense. The other two have dark numbers on a light background.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have questions!

I prefer the ones with few features. I don't think they have GITD hands, the backlight is either only when pushing the button or auto where it responds to your hand moving like you want to look at the watch.

My mudman (think it is this one: http://www.g-peopleland.com/MIRB-Mudman.htm) has a negative display (light numbers on black background), but a normal one is easier to read under normal conditions. Some love the negative displays though.

They can take loads of abuse and I've had one since my army days that is worn smooth, but still functions perfectly.

Oohhh a watch debate :-) !!!

I have a Suunto Core and it is absolutely AWESOME so my recommendation, is drop the G Shock and go for Suunto they look really good and works really good as well...

I have a G-Shock solar with the atomic clock reception to adjust the time. I've had this watch since 2006 and have never had a problem with it. I'm wearing it right now as a matter of fact.

I strongly second Ronny's post. I have no experience with the G-shock, I'm sure they are great. but GOD....those Suunto's are unbelievable. They got models that'll walk your dog in the morning. Sunrise/Sunset times. self calibrating digital compass. Alt/Bar with weather trend indicator. Perfect watch.

I have and wear both. My work watch is my G Shock. (I am a full-time Corrections Deputy). My off-duty is my Suunto. The G Shock is more robust, and is designed for some of the abuse. The Suunto it a great watch, but wouldn't last quite as long in my environment.

The G Shock I have is a Solar Atomic, so I leave it in the window sill when not being worn to get the sunlight. It will runfor a while without seeing a drop of sun, but I like to keep it topped off.

The Suunto doesn't have the solar ability, and I keep a couple extra batteries on hand. If using the extra features of the watch frequently, you will need to in turn change the battery more frequently.

Hope this helps!

Suunto. I've been using them for about ten years now. Super tough. I prefer the vector model but have a core as well. I use mine everyday (altimeter) and it takes a ton of abuse. This one has around 3000 skydives or so on it:

(You can kinda see all the scratches in this pic and most of the lettering has gone)

Only needs a battery every year or two. Great watches!

Out of all the watches I've owned from Rolexes to Citizens, my Casio G-Shock has literally traveled with me on every trip involving a flight that I have ever gone on from Florida to Pakistan and back, it's also the only watch that I have never sold, bought again or traded. I've had the same one that I received as a gift in 1999 that I still have now and use every time I go on vacation or away. Love 'em!

This one^^^^^^. Suunto is ok but this my friend rocks!!! I am a watch guy and for the money it will outlast anything. Never need to set the time and no batteries. It's back lit with the flick of a wrist or press of a button and impervious to a salt water environment ( I live in coastal Louisiana ). G-Shock MT-G do yourself a favor and buy a new one. I have an Omega, Rolex, Lum-Tec, Suunto, etc. and always find myself with the G-Shock on my wrist. Just my .02 for what it's worth.

Not sure why this pic turned out sideways, but like some others here, I am quite smitten with the G-Shock's. Having worn a mid-sized Omega Seamaster for ten years, I wanted something different -- it started running fast and I haven't had it serviced yet, which can be a lengthy and expensive process). I did a lot of shopping for features, etc., and came across this model (GW-3000B). It has world time, an alarm, chronograph, is solar and atomic, etc, and of course is analog. Thus far it's my favorite of all watches I've ever had.

I also picked up on of the OD green Mudmen with the negative display (my Son and I share it), which I really like also, but this one gets all the wrist time.

I really like the newest solar Mudman with the compass, altimeter, thermometer, etc. but I always think back to the Pathfinder I had back in the '90's. Once the novelty of all those features wore off, I never used them. YMMV. I don't think you can go wrong with G-Shock's, and I had great luck finding the best deals on TheBay from reputable dealers (believe it or not, there are fake G-Shocks, go figure).

Good hunting -- picking one out is a lot of the fun.

Prof.

I really like mine, but I wish it was solar and had a compass.

Neato. I didn't even know there was a debate. Love it. Now checking these out on amazon too.

I was going for tough. Mine has already had an encounter with a grinder.

Cool. Thanks.

Some time ago I researched watches for the same features you listed, Suunto is a highly rated watch as well as G-Shock, The suunto watches that I found looked a little too plastic for my taste and I wanted a watch that looks like a watch and with a metal band since the plastic and rubber watch bands all seemed to break too easily. I ended up going with the Casio Pathfinder PAW-2000T, It's solar(only needs a few minutes of any light per day to maintain its' charge), It's atomic so I never have to adjust it, and it has a compass, barometer with thermometer, 100m water resistant, altitude, sunrise and sunset times, month and day, ascent and descent meter, world time, stop watch, count down timer, 5 alarms, mode that indicates last atomic update time and date, and an automatic light that comes on when you tilt your wrist to see the time. The light can be set to use the button if you don't like the auto light and it has a beep reminder of each hour but I turned mine off, And the band is titanium.
All I have to do is make sure it gets a little light each day.
It's not real cheap but I found it on sale. I have had the opportunity to trade it in the past but didn't because I would just have to buy another PAW-2000T to replace it.
I would however consider a Fiddleback Bushcrafter with full wood scales.;)

I was looking at a 30th anniv. mudman last week because of all the cool features for the price, but I hear that Suuntos are top notch

If you want an electronic compass, the Suuntos are much more accurate than Casio Pathfinders. But neither is as tough as a G Shock and both are larger and more expensive.

The basic guide to worthwhile G-Shock features is simple:

- Atomic: makes the watch super accurate, at least if you live in range of an atomic clock signal

- Solar: worth it you use the backlight a lot, otherwise not that important

Otherwise, pick the watch you like. (The classic 5600 series have about the lowest profile.)

I just saw one of those pathfinders. Nothing w a ti band tho. Cool. That might work for a trade.

Pathfinders are nice.

Mine is ti, but doesn't have a compass. Depth meter and altimeter work well though. Not solar either, but a battery seems to last 5+ years so no worry.

The Ti band is why I chose the PAW-2000T, It's the top of the Pathfinder line, There is one model above it, The 5000, But it only comes with the PVC Band.

It's here if you want it, I would definitely buy the same model eventually if I trade mine.
