G10 and dress pants?

Was about ready to hit submit order, and read that G10 jacks up dress pants, like suit pants. Any truth to that? I wear a suit everyday...not a huge deal, but will alter my current ordering spree to catch me up from 1 knife to blade forum newbie status (anywhere from 3-100 knives depending on who you talk to, lol.)

Oh, god, yes. Depending on the texture of the G10. The biggest problem is if you use the clip, it's less of an issue if you don't, IMO and say you smoothen out the G10 a bit yourself.

If the texture is too rough, i.e. Emerson G10 lol, a bit of "stropping" with an old leather belt can help. Old, discardable leather belt. Don't overdo it though, it's rough for a purpose.

If it's an Emerson, do not wave it either, that will destroy the pants. Unless the seams are reinforced.

Hope that helps!

yep unless its a smoother texture.

To help a bit more, I find that if the texture of the G10 approaches the finish of a Kershaw Emersons ie the CQC-8K, it's still grippy and will not tear your pants unless you use the clip.

So that's the smoothness I would say would worry the material the least.

Anything from PM2 roughness to true out of factory Emerson roughness (really rough) will.

I carry all the above, that's my experience. If you carry g10, make sure you smoothen it out a bit and don't use the clip.

What about the G10-CF like on the Gayle Bradley? Still issues or no?

Sadly, I will always use the clip. Maybe it's because I'm in the south, or that I carry a black spyderco native, but no one has ever commented...so I keep doing it.

All the CF I've ever worked with was aerodynamic low drag stuff so smooth as a baby's bottom. Unless they've deliberately roughened the surface, I suspect it'll be almost like polished metal scales.

The thing that really matters then with smooth scales is, since you like using the clip, is how tight the clip actually grasps the material.

As a rule, dress pants I never use a clip, however, my jeans and everything else, I clip 'em.

You'll be wondering then, how easy is it to find and pull it out if I don't use a clip? Well, the answer honestly, is with Emersons they are on the largish side, so they don't tend to flip or flopever in the pocket, at least in my experience, and from a tactile perspective, I know the feel of my knives, so it's not an issue. I appreciate the convenience of the clip, but this is the compromise I guess, for dressing up!

Part of the issue is how tight the clip is. Super tight and can ruin pants, no matter the pants material. I learned my lesson, and pocket carry or suit coat carry with slacks.

I replaced the g-10 scales on my Manix 2 with ironwood. Slips on and off the pocket nicely, but those scales were not cheap.

I've carried a Spyderco Native clipped to the pocket for 3 yrs, no issues so far, but all the above points are valid, and I'm re evaluating. Guess it may just be time for more Natives to be safe, lol.

Have a tailor stitch a thin piece of leather to the area where a pocket clip secures itself to the dress pants.

Any handle material which feels too coarse rubbing your fingers back and forth will damage soft(er) fabric in time. You can either fairly easily sand down the G-10's coarseness to your liking or go with smoother surfaces to begin with. There's a lot of personal preferences that goes into all of this and there are trade offs.

As others have mentioned, it depends on the G10 texture. I carry a Benchmade Kulgera and have never had an issue with any of my dress pants or khakis.

Pretty much all handle material will shred your pants, even smoothed Ti. The trick is to slightly, and I mean slightly adjust the tension on the pocket clip. It's not hard to do at all on 99% of knives with exposed fasteners.

I am in a medical office four days a week and carry a Benchmade 531 clipped to my pocket. No problems with my dress slacks. EVER!
I did switch to a deep carry clip though. Fantastic combo for dress clothes.

Pants, even nice dress pants, are far cheaper than almost every single one of my knives.
If pants wear out for whatever reason, I just replace them. :)

Shred those pockets and then buy more pants...stimulate the economy!!!
