I'm looking for a lightweight, inexpensive carry knife.I can't decide between the two. They're both lockbacks, which I like. The blade steels are so similar it doesn't make much of a difference to me.I really like the looks of the K-Bar,maybe a little more than the Byrd, but then again I love G10.

They're both about the same price.Which would you choose?Just looking for some feedback.

Thanks for your input,I'm guessing most will go with the BYRD,but I've had BYRDS B4.Never had a K-BAR folder though.

Get a Tenacious. It is similar price and has the round hole.

something about that Bryd hold i don't like

I have both. The Byrd (5.6oz) feels a LOT heavier than the KaBar(4.1 oz). The two are constructed so different from each other as to make comparisons difficult.
Since you've owned Byrds before, you know about their SS liners, etc. The KaBar is built more like a Spyderco Delica...linerless FRN scales, lockback, etc.
Both blades hold an edge well, AUS-8 or equivalent.
Since you mentioned "lightweight", I think the KaBar is your knife.

I've got both. Both are great inexpensive knives, but the Byrd works for me. the Blade steel takes a wicked edge and, IMHO, lasts a bit longer than AUS-8. The blade also has 'jimping' on the bottom and top parts of the blade closest to the handle. The handle gives me an ergonomic grip over the Dozier and the G-10 is 'grippier' than my Dozier. These are just my opinions. Bu, whatever you pick, you couldn't lose either way. Hope this helps.

:thumbup:Thanks for the feedback guys.I actually like the comet shaped hole in the BYRDS.I was initially leaning towards the G10 Cara Cara in the first place, but there's something about that K-Bar I really like.I'll probably wind up getting both in due time.

P.S. Doesn't the Tenacious have a linerlock?I'm not a big fan of linerlocks.

I have a Byrd Flight and a KaBar Large Dozier. I've handled the regular size KaBar Doziers. All the Doziers I've used or handled have thumb studs.

I find the edge retention of the Flight(8Cr13MoV) and the Large Dozier (AUS8) to be very similar.

I think there is little difference in quality and either the Doziers or Byrds can be had for less than $20. Although I prefer the KaBar Doziers, I think you will have to choose based on your own personal preference for the esthetics and blade designs. Whichever you choose you will have a winner.

Have you considered the Spyderco Native?

Not much difference in price, and the Native has S30V blade-steel....and it's made in the U.S.A.

Good luck,
Allen

I have another Byrd on the way for $25, same as the one in your OP. I find them well made and comparable to an Endura.

I have had the Byrd for a while I love it I find myself edc when I have much cooler and much more expensive knives just sitting there .It`s also a great deal you would have a hard time finding a knife of anywhere near the quaility for the money.I like the kabar also I don`t own one but I have often almost ordered one.

I got the G10 BYRD.Pretty irresponsible since I'm broker than broke,but I'm sure you guys understand :D

BTW,Thanks for all the feedback guys:thumbup:

I'll get that KaBar Large Dozier in due time.I hope they don't get discontinued:eek:

I'd go with the Dozier.

My friend has a few spyderco's in 8Cr13MoV, and he's really not impressed with the edge stability, rolled edges all over the serrations.

I don't have a Cara Cara but did have a Raven. Very nice knife but I gave it to my son-in-law. Spyderco makes fine products and I have several. I also have a zytel Dozier and an aluminun handled Dozier both by Kabar. Mine are mid size not the large Kabar Dozier folder. Both companies provide good knives for a low price. The Kabars have a real nice ergonomic fit to the hand and just plain feel great and cut and slice well. Good edge geometry on the Kabars.

I got the G10 cara cara.I won't be buying another knife for quite some time.I only worked 4 days in the whole month of August.I gotta mountain of bills to pay.
Please checkout my for sale threads.I'll be adding stuff on a daily basis.

Thanks,
John

Thanks,As usual with most Byrds, the action was a little stiff.Applied a couple drops of Hoppes#9 & everything's smooth as butter;)

The edge was perfect out of the box, didn't require any sharpening.I did strop it a few times....well just for the heck of it:).I love the G10!BYRD quality is top notch IMO!

Good purchase, JTR. I have 3 Cara Cara knives and I am very pleased with them.

I hope work picks up soon for you. It's nasty when you have to sell off some of your collection. :(
