G10 Griptillian question...

Hello! I have a benchmade mini grip (556), and I love this little blade! But I want something bigger and with a thicker blade, so I'm looking into getting the 550-1. The only question I have is, is the handle hollow like the 550? Or is it solid g10 with just the cutout for the axis lock system. Thanks!

Beware though that Benchmade's production quality and their customer service have both gone downhill lately, in my opinion at least.

1: My 550-1 can't hold an edge for the lightest tasks, which I assume is due to a bad batch of CPM-20CV.
2: The pivot screw barely works. It needs adjusted at least once a day. It's not stripped, but isn't staying put. Blue lock-tite doesn't help. I think it is sized incorrectly.
3: I've been unable to get a response from them for weeks now. I really regret supporting BM now and will go with other brands from now on. At least I won't feel like I was ripped off when I use my beater blade that holds a better edge.

Oh, that's really a shame. My 550-1 is close to perfection.
Held it's really sharp edge very good for months of daily use. Mostly fairly light use, but quite a bit of paper and cardboard cutting at times nonetheless, I did strop it lightly a few times between march and now, and didn't put it into my Edge Pro until two weeks ago, not because it was dull, but because I wanted to test my new Edge Pro polishing stone. No problem with my pivot screw either.

Really a shame if it's hit or miss to get a good -1 Griptillian. :(

I lost my Mini-Grip and I was so sad about it that I bought a regular one with CPM-M4 steel (BladeShow 2015 limited I think).

I can not say anything bad about those two Grippies, maybe I got lucky.
Really love the M4 version.

Had 2 710s as well and I had to adjust the pivot screw of the first one all the time.

Have you tried picking up the phone and calling Benchmade?

On mine, instead of loosening, the pivot screw actually gets tighter gradually over time. I thought mine was dirty or gummed up and I washed it and oiled it and it was still tight. I had to back the pivot screw off. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but on the G10 mini grips, the pivot screw torx head is on the opposite side than it is on the standard mini?
Anyway, first one I had that got tighter rather than looser.

Mine is perfect.
Holds an edge.
Pivot is perfect after I readjusted it to my
taste.
Blue locktite holding fine.

My question for sd790.
What are you cutting?
Did you CLEAN the threads before applying the locktite?
Did you actually call bm?

I open a couple of envelopes, maybe cut the tape on a few packages, trim my fingernails - trivial light use.
I wiped the threads before applying loctite.
I have not called them on the phone. I would expect a response via email by now, though. I'm not in a hurry because i don't even bother to carry that knife any more and BM doesn't do refunds.

Doesn't do refunds? You purchased this direct from BM? Not concerned enough to call but concerned enough to join BF and complain about it?..Call CS..I assure you their customer service is of the best in the business.. They will sort you out.

I had no luck with benchmade over email when one of the springs in the axis lock of my knife broke. I called them, they gave me instructions on how to ship it out. Once they received it, they replaced a majority of the screws, sharpened it, replaced the pocket clip, replaced both springs in the lock, and did multiple other things to make the knife like new. It was overall a great experience. I would definitely recommend just shipping it in and having them look at it. I think you just got one that maybe a new employee set up, or just came from a bad batch.

It gets dull from opening a couple envelopes and slicing some packing tape? I find that hard to believe.

Benchmade customer service is the best I've ever dealt with (but I've only ever dealt with Spyderco and Benchmade) and Im positive that Benchmade will do anything to fix your problem, whether that means fixing it, or replacing it. My brothers 550 blade had a hairline crack when he received it (very rare) and they sent him a brand new one for no charge. I agree they're email service sucks, but call them, and then assess their care for their customers.

Its not hard to believe if he got a blade from a batch of bad heat treat, but benchmade is usually very reliable with that.
