G10 Griptillian question...

Its not hard to believe if he got a blade from a batch of bad heat treat, but benchmade is usually very reliable with that.

Ya I don't mean to call him a liar, I just would have thought any steel wouldn't dull on a couple envelopes. But hey you learn something new every day

The only way that a blade could dull by cutting an envelope is if the edge was ground very thin, and the heat treat is bad. Bad heat treats aren't that common by a reputable company like benchmade, but it still happens.

Make sure BM got your email. I have had BM respond to me and if you reply directly to the response ( rather than click on the email of the person sending you the response), it looks like it sends but if you go to your sent box, it will say unable to respond. .......
Not sure if that makes sense?
Don't answer their computer generated response, but rather copy and paste the email into your browser. I have thought Benchmade didn't respond to me and waited a week and checked my sent box and found out my response to them didn't send. When I copied and pasted, they got back to me the next day.

Beware though that Benchmade's production quality and their customer service have both gone downhill lately, in my opinion at least.

1: My 550-1 can't hold an edge for the lightest tasks, which I assume is due to a bad batch of CPM-20CV.
2: The pivot screw barely works. It needs adjusted at least once a day. It's not stripped, but isn't staying put. Blue lock-tite doesn't help. I think it is sized incorrectly.
3: I've been unable to get a response from them for weeks now. I really regret supporting BM now and will go with other brands from now on. At least I won't feel like I was ripped off when I use my beater blade that holds a better edge.

Have you tried sharpening your Grip yet? Mine had a bit of a burr when I first got it, and it seemed like it was having issues holding an edge. A little bit of time on the Sharpmaker, the burr is gone, and it cuts much better now. I will say, CPM-20CV is a stubborn steel, and it takes a bit to get it to do what you want.

Absolutely call Benchmade, rather than email them. I've sent them emails, and didn't get a response until they had already taken care of the issue. Every time I've called, they've been very personable and helpful. I'd be tempted to call and just shoot the breeze if I didn't think I was just wasting their time.

1. Envelopes will not dull CPM-20CV. Even with no heat treat, that wouldn't happen. The knives are hand sharpened, so the more likely scenario is that there is a burr or wire edge causing your issues. When you sharpened it, did you get to the apex and make sure you didn't leave a burr? What's that? You haven't sharpened it? Try that first.
2. It is possible the pivot is off by a fraction of a millimeter. Instead of loctite, use some plumber's tape on the threads. The pivot screw just might need to be replaced, but try that first.
3. When you call them during business hours, what did they do? Oh... you haven't called. Then you haven't had the pleasure of dealing with Mikah (I'm sure I'm messing up her name). She'll take great care of you, and you'll end up wishing you could date her, if you're single. Benchmade CS is the best in the business. Just call them -- after you have sharpened your knife and tried using it again -- and they will get you squared away.

Interesting! The CPM-20CV in edge holding question.
I bought about at the same time a Mini Grip 550-1 20CV and a Mini Ritter Grip which has M390. Both of these steels should perform about the same.
They don't! It may be the blade grind, but the M390 Outperforms the 20CV by a lot.(wood, cardboard, sisal twine) Even after reprofiling, honing, stropping.
I like the M390.:)

I've spoken with someone at Benchmade. They have given me a shipping label and my knife is currently on its way back to me. Once they received it, the turnaround time was only a couple of days. I'll let you know the outcome soon.

I got my 550-1 back and it's almost like I have a completely different knife! (It's not - my lanyard is still on it.) It looks like brand new and I'm thorough impressed. The action is buttery smooth and the minor blemishes in the scales have even been buffed out. I am guessing that the blade has been replaced along with some of the internals, but that's hard to tell. It may have just been cleaned and properly refitted. Whatever they did, this knife has definitely been significantly improved! I have not used it much yet, so it will be interesting to see how the edge holds now.

Usually BKC sends a printed list of what they did to your/my knives in the returning box. But what matters the most is that you're satisfied with what they did. Congrats and enjoy using that 550-1.

Good morning all,

What would be the best dps angle for a 550-1? My experience is with S30V and 154CM. The S30V is great with a 18 dps whereas the 154CM at 19 dps. Original grind was 21dps and 20dps both on regular sized grips.

Cheers.

No experience with 20cv, but curious how you arrived at those angles for s30v and 154cm?
