G10 Question?

I have recently become a big fan of Spyderco knives. I am curious though why aren't more models available with G10 panels? I am looking for a PE Endura with the G10 and a PE Native G10. I know that they have been made before because I've seen them. After searching all the retail sites on line I've noticed that G10 has probably been an option on most models at one time or another just not the ones I want now. I have given my time to searching the exchange forums because I'd settle for a slightly used one, but that is really luck of the draw. Why doesn't Spyderco just make G10 models more available?

Also, when will the Stainless Cricket be available?

Thanks,
Jon

I'll save you time...

There is no G-10 Endura. That would be the Police. The c10 is just a cheaper version of the c07, and g-10 would make the price range close to the same.

The g-10 native has a few flavors. Blue G-10 was a BFC special. There were black g-10 with shell inlays available from spyderco. Someone posted a link on the home forum that had them... http://www.newgraham.com/experimental.htm

The reason G-10 isn't used as much(AFAIK) is the price point. Just like the SS -- FRN debate. To use G-10 and keep close to the same price, you'd be looking at something along the lines of 6A for the G-10 endura. Maybe even 440C.

KH,
The flat ground police looks a lot like the endura. and you should be able to find a G10 one. Also I think new graham had the CE Natives (root beer). I know that john F jensen has the PE blue inlay (just ordered one to be customized, unless I got the last one :) ).

Oops I didn't mean to write Endura. I instead meant to write Delica. I want a G10 Delica with a plain edge and a G10 Native with a plain edge. The Natives on Newgrahmn.com have the Spyder Edge.

Jon

The G-10 delica would have been the c05 standard. It's close enough that most ppl can't tell the difference unless they have the 2 blades side by side.

Check out John F. Jenson. Their website shows plain-edge G-10 Natives with the blue pearl inlay as in stock

www.johnfjensen.com

p.s. the site shows the Native as FRN but the pearl inlay Natives were actually G-10

I don't understand these terms:

"FRN" or "c05 standard".

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks,
Jon

FRN is fiberglass renforced nylon(plastic or kelvar)The standard was a G10 handled knife that is discontinued,it was not a G10 Delica but it was so close the the Delica it is hard to tell the differance.

The Endura and the Delica have, for some time, been what appear to be Spyderco's entry level knives. The original ones were made with FRN hilts AND clips and the blades were of good, but not great, steel. They were an excellent value for the price. But the clips had a tendency to catch on things and to get bent, at which point they became worse than useless, at least as far as I could see. I lost maybe three Delicas as a result of this before I gave up on them. Then Spyderco brought out the newer model witht eh switchable steel clip. I bought both the Endura nad the Delica versions and I loved them both until I was bitten by the bug for more expensive versions. I still have them and I will keep them for they are excellent knives with their ATS-55 blades.

So, is FRN the plastic material that is on the light weight models? Or is it an early G10 type material(i.e. pannel type rather than the injection moulded type)?

Jon

Yes, FRN is the plastic handles on the lightweight models.

G-10(just for info) is a fiberglass composite, with about 10% glass content in it. To the best of my knowledge.
