G10 vs Micarta

Good Morning All,

I've been doing some research on the handle options as I try to decide which route to go with my first order.

Some of what I read stated that Micarta can absorb fluids and may not function as well in cold weather due to this. Also, reading that the color can fade because of the absorption. In our last PCS move, the military sent us to NE where we get some pretty extreme cold.

The G10 has less maintenance and doesn't absorb fluids, but can feel a little slicker than the Micarta of not textured.

Both are durable.

Is there any reason you guys lean one versus the other?

I know quality can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and since this is my first Busse I don't know how what they have holds up against the other.

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get as much info as possible before placing my order

Micarta does absorb fluids , but not much , do not warry about it.

In conmpare G10 to Micarta , Micarta slabes are more friendly for user .

if you just want to get a pure blood user type knife from BUSSE and Kin , go rubber handle ones , very cool for hard use , my SYKCO911 served me well.

dingy

Questions? That's why we are here. You will soon be answering other newcomer's inquiries. Micarta fluid absorption not that great. We are talking mainly skin oil from handling over time, although other fluids, mainly oils, can also be absorbed. And they clean up well with mild detergent and dry rapidly. Any dampness under field conditions, makes them tackier, aiding the grip. I prefer micarta for rugged use, G10's for looks. Sure other's will weigh in with their experiences...;-)

+1^^^tuica nailed it....if this this going to be a USER then have no fear of the micarta GOOD STUFF very durable and easy to clean as well as reshape the handle if you so desire. Busse has been
producing micarta handled knives from the very beginning and if there were any issues with this product Jerry would have made the changes long ago so that is a testament to the quality of this material.

You can sand micarta without ruining it, right? And the absorption is not deep at all, at least not from what I've experienced; I would think a very fine sanding would clean it (I wouldn't even bother unless it was something like blood....); and you should get quite a few seasons out of a set of handles.

If it's a user, I'd go for grip over everything else, given the choice; and micarta's is better than G10's.

Paper micarta absorbs virtually nothing. Although this is based on non Busse knives but its probably universal across the board. I've got a polished G10 (again non-busse) but it seems to have this 'powdery' feel to it and it does slip compared to micarta. If its my money I'll go for paper micarta. :)

So I guess that brings up another question, which type of Micarta? Canvas or paper? I have only a single knife that has canvas but haven't used it overly much because I was getting hot spots

Canvas and linen micarta are the best for hard use. I try to get all my choppers and bigger knives in canvas or linen. I get smaller knives in canvas or G10.

I vastly prefer canvas micarta on all my user blades, large and small. Rough sanded G10 works too, just doesn't have quite as nice of a feel to me as the micarta does.

Both will serve you well, G10 is MUUUUUCH better looking. Busse's G10 is textured and provides a solid grip

Great minds think alike. G10 is nice. Users though, I like the grippiness of micarta.

But but...... The Aesthetics is so important!! Thats why we love Busse knives in G10 :)

I have also discovered that most ( 90%? ), of the micarta handle Busse's that I have purchased are canvas. I have one linen, and no paper micarta's. What is everyone else's "considered ratio" on canvas/linen/paper micarta handle knives in the Busse chain?...;-)

Never had issues with micarta absorbing any fluids, and I have a lot of knives with micarta. If looking at a large knife, I'd say go micarta, as the G10 adds some unnecessary heft. If you're looking at a small knife, go with whatever you think looks better. Neither one will ever break so you can't really go wrong in my opinion.

For a user, I also prefer canvas micarta over G-10; to me the canvas micarta has a more positive feel to it without being too abrasive. For the maximum comfort, try Resiprene-C grips (Busse Basic series; also some Swamp Rat & Scrap Yard knives).

G10 has a lot more color choices.
Micarta has better grip.
But either one will last a long time...

I love the feel of the canvas on my tglb but I was always afraid that blood would stain it so the last one I ordered got G10.
