G10 vs. micarta

I don't about other manufacturers , but after I disassembled my BM 710 few days ago , I wasn't impressed at all with those G10 scales

I could easily break those scales with absolute ease

This is irrelevant though , because the G10 scales are sitting on very strong steel liners , so there is no issue with this specific knife , but in general , I would NEVER buy any knife with G10 handle with no liners , like the Military
did you break it? it might seem a lot easier to break than it actually is. I agree though, I think I'd definitely want a knife with a TI liner and G10.

I much prefer the look and feel of Micarta over G-10. I wish more companies would use smoother G-10 instead of the aggressive texture commonly found. I like Benchmades G-10 best, though I wouldn't complain if it were even smoother.

I'm asking about weight because I just purchased a new Bark River STS-3 (Pic review here) and the handle seems very heavy compared to the overall weight of the knife.

Like others, if I have to choose, I prefer the look and feel of Micarta. Both are extremely durable, and I would be quite happy with either.

;)
Micarta absorbs sweat and darkens. G-10 doesn't. I like the grain of micarta but G-10 is hard to beat in terms of durability.

same. +1. i like the look of micarta but g10 just performs better. i do however love dual color g10 especially when sculpted. g10 is also lighter which is probably why manufacturers choose to use it to save weight.

I like Micarta and G10 about the same. I like them both more than other alternatives like FRN or other some such.

G10 is a real bear to work with.
Micarta on the other hand is quit pleasant to work with.

Micarta

G-10/FR-4 - is a high-pressure laminate consisting of a continuous filament glass cloth with an epoxy resin binder. Today what is called G-10 is actually FR-4, the flame retardant version of G-10, both are rated at 285 degree F continuous operating temperature.

Micarta - are high-pressure laminates that include canvas (C), canvas electrical (CE), linen (L), linen electrical (LE), epoxy glass FR-4 and G-10.

The question you should be asking is, whats the best resin to make my Micarta knife handles out of: Polyester Resin or Epoxy.

Polyester Resin has high shrink and water absorption. Epoxy resin does not :D
