Just finished a knife with G10 scales. Second time I have used it on a knife. I think it will be my last. With all of the options available for handles it just is not worth the skin irritation that comes with it.

Some people are more sensitive to fiberglass than others. Did you wear long sleeves when working it and have good dust control/ventilation?

I don't have an issue with g10 but I have to wear gloves and be mindful when applying paste wax to scales or I'll get a nasty rash for days.

Coco bollo gives me problems with breathing almost immediately I start to use it. No more of course. Frank

G10 pretty much immediately stops me up. Makes my eyes weep, even with goggles and a respirator. It's not my friend.

Oly tropical/exotics also give me some skin irritation, purpleheart and similar woods give me hives.

I started wearing elastic arm banded coveralls in the shop. Stops all the nonsense.

Nothing better for kitchen knives tho.

Luckily I grind in my garage with the door open and I put a big fan blowing across my grinder so it blows the dust outside.

Corian is good. Its ugly tho. I wish I could get corian in the full spread we have for g10. Jade corian would be most welcome.

They make a hell of a variety of it, Ive got two boxes of samples. Once I get to em, ill shoot some shots of the the more desirable stuff. The multicolor fleckstone and whatnot but it is indeed ugly, ugly ugly.

EDIT: i should also mention your work is super beautiful

It seemed to me that the Corian I tried was on the brittle side. This was several years back and perhaps it has been changed. Frank

I have never tried Corian but USAKnifemakers said that Kirinite was about the same strength as Corian, but it cracked REALLY easily. The G10 I just used seemed indestructible compared to it.

How did you crack Kirinite? I've used it a few times, and found it to be very tough?

I dropped an 3/16 inch peice from about 3 feet up on to concrete. It landed right on the corner and it shattered into about 8 peices. Another peice (3/8 inch) broke in half when the drill bit caught in it. I managed to save it with superglue, but for $15 a pop, i would much rather go through the hassle of G10.

Thanks!

I didn't know it was available in anything but white and ugly fake marble. Though, one time I was given a chunk of hunter orange that the guy said was corian. I didn't believe it was corian so I never used it. Its still in the shop. My home countertops are white corian. If we ever replace them I'm keeping every piece. Dylan made pistol grips out of white corian and they are gorgeous!!

I think its the same stuff Frank. We've never had any of it break but certainly it is a bit brittle especially compared to micarta or g10. Its held up on Dylan's revolver for a good while now.

As far as corion goes, just go to your local Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, etc... and check out the countertop selections. Corion and its alternative brands come in many colors and the samples are just about the right size. In my short stent making knives, I've used various corion colors on my antler handle knives to add some color between the brass guard and the antler.

+1 I've got a few samples from Lowes or HD. Haven't used them (they are mostly the cheesy marble stuff), but may one day for bolsters or something.

May as well grab a cork flooring sample while you're at it. Sand it to remove whatever coating they put on it and it'll work as a decent strop.

Lowes around here no long has corian, but luckily in my travels, I met a lady who owns a countertop store, and she gives me all the various colors of Corian samples I want.
