Gaffs?

I am interested in the process involved in making of gaffs (for cocking), both one and two piece. My enquiry is for historical purposes. Since the sport is no longer legal in most places I have found it difficult to get detailed information. It is not my intention to incite anone to break any local laws I need to satisfy my curiosity.
