Gage Steel?

I have aquired a peice of steel that came from a machine shop. It is a gage (not gauge) plate. I have cut a couple blades out of it and wonder....does anyone know anything about it and what type of actual steel it might be? And sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks!

Mild steel, worthless for knife blades.

The spelling muddies the waters, together with the lack of location in your profile, but "gauge plate" in the UK is another term for Ground Flat Stock; almost invariably O1 steel.

Might be worth Austenitizing and quenching to see if it hardens
