17 years ago I boughy some gage stock from Campbell tools for clock making tools. I never got around to working this one bar that is 1" Thick X 2" wide X 18" long.
Composition as written
is:
Carbon .90%
Chromium .50%
Manganese 1.1 %
Tungsten .50%
Vanadium .15%

Is this similar to any of the names of materials that I am more familiar with and is it suitable for knife making?

States Heat to 1440-1490. Quench inlight oil Temper to 300 or to 400-500 for maximum hardness (dies and punches)

Thanks for any info!

It looks like I can make knives out of this but I'm going to have to cut off sections and forge them to thickness.

What would a piece like this sell for these days? It was spendy 17 years ago...I suspect it's cheaper now.

I paid 50 so it hasn't changed much. looks like I can get about 18 knives out of that bar if I can learn to hot forge it properly.

Don't cut it off to forge (just my opinion) but I find it easier to forge holding onto a bar rather than trying to hold onto a pair of tongs. Just forge out the blade, draw out the tang, cut it off and start all over again.

Have fun, I've got a 1/2" and 7/8" bar of O1 round stock waiting around for some inspiration. :D
