There seems to be a disconnect somewhere between my belief that gaiters make my legs invincible and gaiters making my legs invincible. :o

A couple weeks ago, after pushing my way through a thicket of poison oak, the only place I had a reaction was a spot on the back of my left leg, exactly where my gaiters were "protecting" me. Now after using a similar "barrel through" technique involving some thick brush, my lower legs are all cut up.

Either I need more durable gaiters or I need to alter my beliefs about gaiters. I haven't decided which, yet.

So your gaiters got shredded? Mine are lightweight, the Shortie eVent gaiters from Integral Designs. While they've seen a lot of use, they've only been in what I'd call "heavy brush" a few times. They still look almost new, though. They really are short. Only make my ankles feel invincible:D

So you're saying that it's my beliefs that need to change? :D

The gaiters in these two instances were BD Front Point Gaiters. Made from adjectives like "ballistic" and "tactical." Here's the rub, they're not shredded at all, just really dirty and laughing at me.

Oh, and they kept all pebbles out of my shoes, but were completely ineffective at keeping them out of my backpack and the back of my pants. :o

Your gaiters didn’t keep the pebbles out of your pack? They're worthless! Send them to me and I'll dispose of them good and proper. :)

I may have to do just that. :)

I have two pair of gaiters, the BD Front Point and a pair of OR Expedition Crocs. The Crocs protect my legs well but are VERY warm. I'm wondering if the standard Crocs are a half way between the comfort of the BD and the protection of the Exp Crocs.

If these are the coyote ones I have seen.... Please send them to me ASAP!!

:D :D

I use cross country ski gators but more or less just to keep the bottom of my pants dry and prevent snags. But it sounds like you need snake gators for the hard use you want, just google snake gators and you'll find all kinds of options.

OR Croc's the *only* name in gaiters. I have the 'normal' Crocs, the Expedition Croc's and the lower ankle Crocs. I've tried others (some store brands, etc), but OR knows how to make 'em right!!!

Great suggestions. Thanks!

I'm a big fan of OR and am strongly considering the standard crocs, but the snake gaiters are definitely worth a look. I may pick up a pair of the WW2 type on the cheap too to see how they wear and to compare "stupid hot" to the "very warm" of my expedition crocs. :)

Thanks again, guys!

Ive got the OR Verglas gaiters. I only wear them when its muddy or real wet to keep my pant legs dry. They feel warm and i dont really like hiking in them. My pants are already reinforced at the ankles and legs, so i dont need the added protection gaiters provide. And proper gaiters should protect your legs from rashes and cuts.
