Gambling...

Like Full said, gambling pretty much sucks in Colorado. The casinos in Central City and Black Hawk were really cool 10 years ago or so. Unfortunately, Las Vegas guys bought them out.

It’s kind of funny how the poker dudes haven’t responded to this thread yet. :p Maybe one of them will offer at least a good anecdote sometime soon? :)

Don't know if this counts, but I won $2000 the first time I played Bingo (hey, I only went to hang out with my mom, OK?). I can officially never make fun of old ladies ever again.

I just got back from a fun night of gambling at a local Indian Casino.
The wife and I played Slots and video poker. Had fun and came out ahead.
Now neither one of us is a big gambler. Pulling $40 out of the atm to gamble an evening away has always been tough. LOL
But, twice in about the last 6 weeks someone has hit BIG jackpots at this little casino. amazing!
Whats your biggest win/loss story?
I doubled my $20 tonight Woo!:p

So let's hear it...how'd you do?

I forgot to mention that the big wins were in excess of 500,000 each.
Both were won on PENNY machines.
And when I said small casino I meant... smaller than the local hardware store!!

I think PhilL is a card player. Maybe he'll chime in with his big win/loss stories.

The guy I work with is down about a grand a month to the casino.

I've hit three royals playing video poker online, one for $400, one for 400 euros, and one for 400 pounds. Blackjack, I think my best session was up 250 pounds or so.

Have had a pretty nice run at 5/10 hold 'em over the past few days, won maybe $650 over a couple sessions, but dropped $800 or so in the past day. Variance can be pretty brutal, the previous week was +$1200 or so. I think I broke a mouse, and destroyed an office chair over some of the beats, not mentally or emotionally prepared for the swings at this level yet, I think. I can't even imagine how jaded the guys at the highest stakes must be, some of these guys have $30k+ swings regularly. At the biggest game going at the moment (the 4k/8k game in Vegas), $100k+ swings are common.

The biggest game ever was between the banker Andy Beal and the Vegas pros, $100k/$200k heads up limit hold 'em, there's a book about it called 'The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King'.

Is that a good book? I currently have it in my shopping basket at Amazon.com, but still haven’t purchased it.

There’s a new TV show that started airing this week on The Game Show Network call “High Stakes Poker”. It’s a cash game that features some of the best pros in the world. I don’t remember all the details, but the minimum initial buy-in is $100,000 and players can re-buy for a minimum of $50,000.

I haven’t seen the show yet, but Daniel Negreanu played in it and I read some of his blog entries about it when the show taped a few months ago. He bought-in for $1,000,000 and IIRC lost about $700,000 over the course of two days. On the third day though, he made back around $500,000 I think.

The emotional fortitude required to deal with those kinds of swings is waaay beyond my comprehension. Even losing $1,000 in a day is something I probably couldn’t take. Playing poker with friends for really low stakes is the most fun for me. Sometimes I’ll throw a huge hissy fit just from losing a lot of fake money in play chips online. :o LOL!

Yeah, I've read about the GSN show, might be interesting if they actually show some hands, from what I've heard it's ended up a bunch of ads interspersed with a few hands.

The book is definitely an interesting read, particularly because it shows a lot of what goes on in the big, live games in Vegas, including profiles of various name players and the poker hierarchy.

It's also interesting if you play poker because heads up play is so different from the usual full ring games, and is a much different game from even the short-handed games that've become popular recently.
