I'm a second generation Cardinals fan but I have to grudgingly admit that the Mets have been far and away the best team (overall) in the National League all season. The Cardinals (and the rest of the NL) have been downright embarrasing for weeks at a time. The Braves watched the post-season from their living rooms for the first time in over a decade. Interleague games were a sick joke. The American League just plain whoopped us. To sum it up, if any NL team deserves to go to the Series it's probably the Mets. It pains me to say that, of course.
However, it really doesn't matter which NL team goes to Detroit on Saturday. It will be a four (or maybe five) game slaughter. The Tigers are going all the way. It would take a National League team of 1975 Cinci Reds caliber to take them down. The way their pitching staff shut down the Yanks and the A's should have told you everything you need to know. Plus they'll show up at Comerica Park after a week off, something neither the Mets nor the Cards will be able to do.
All that said... It would be nice to see the Cards win the NLCS. It would be a "flyover country" World Series. ESPN would have to choke on the fact that their beloved east coast teams didn't make it.
I've been wrong on every game between the Mets and Cards. First, with Pedro and El Duque out, I figured the Mets were done. Then, with Glavine looking good, I figured the Cards were done and he goes out and gets outpitched by Weaver. Then I figure the Cards have it set up with Carpenter, and now the Mets win and we go to game 7.
I ain't picking this one. I've tired of being wrong. I suppose as a Red Sox fan, I can't root for the Mets, though. My foot is still aching from kicking a radiator in 1986 when Buckner booted the ball
