Game Warden for backpacking???

I was thinking about getting a GW lately. Do you guys think it would be a good backpacking knife? I don't want a big Busse I want to go as light as possible, and the GW seems to fit the bill. However the blade seems a little too short though. I probably won't be using it to chop stuff up just to cut what ever needs to be cut.

Honestly, for the money I would pick up a boss street at factory prices. I'm not really comfortable with an outdoors knife any smaller than that. The GW is cool, just a little too small IMO.

Since you dont like the shorter blade of the game warden, I would look into a boney active duty, or meaner street. There both a little longer in blade length than the game warden.

Yep, Boss St. @ factory prices. Better size too in my opinion. Enjoy your purchase either way :D

I love my GW, but I did buy it at factory price. Its .22 thick I think, so could be a bit more useful if it was thinner, still I'm happy with it. BOSS Street is a hell of a deal, and its a great knife. I heard that assault shaker might return, so I'm waiting on that one.

Between both mentioned, I'd go with a thin .140 GW. The boss street is kind of heavy for it's size and thick but you can't beat the price right now.

+1

It's perfect for that use and it's currently available from Busse at a great price.

The thin GWs are great, but I think the Skeleton Warden would be even better if your looking for minimal weight.
As far as a great packing knife I'd go with something from the Badger Attack family. Not a chopper, but is capable in a pinch. Good for just about everything else. A little big by some peoples standards, but I think it's worth carrying.

I've carried and used my OJ warden quite a bit in the woods. I certainly wouldn't feel under-knifed if that was all I had, although it would be nice to pair it with a machete. A 14" machete and a thin warden would be a great, lightweight combo.

I think a Cultillus would be perfect for your needs.

You want to go Light when packing, and the Cultie with its longer straight handle is a little cutting powerhouse. A very under rated knife I feel.
Its much better than a GW for any task you may need it for while in the wild.

If you think you may need a bigger knife an ABA would be great at .150, but they are hard to find and pricey. Maybe a anorexic version of the Boss St. will come along, if so that would be a good one also.

I use my game warden or my swamp warden (I think that's what it's called) when I'm hiking and am fine. Handy little knife. I believe the swamp wardens will be sold again very soon. Those are great deals for the price!

Personally I wouldn't take a knife with less than a 4" blade into the field, but that's me. :)

I usually try to take sjtac in my backpack as well. But for short day hikes where i know it's a well travelled trail i'm perfectly fine with the warden. Heck, for many years I only used to take a swiss army knife with me! :p

Like I said, it was my opinion. ;)

I don't even own any knives with less than a 4" blade, well there is one, but it's a folding knife. :)

Cultie or Nuke Mustkrat will give you the added blade length, INFI performance and lightweight you are looking for.... try one.

I find the wardens to be more useful in the woods than the cultellus. The handle on the cultellus is too thin and narrow to get a good grip on, it tends to twist in the hand. There's a lot more "meat" to get a hold of with the wardens. YMMV.

In that size range, I like the Active Duty much better, both for handle design and blade shape. Of the ones already mentioned, though, I'd pick the Boss Street to take for a one-knife hike. I love the blade shape for general use and the handle suits me well.

Incidentally, I know that "thin" seems to be "in" these days, but if I were to choose to take one knife and settled on an Active Duty, my Mili AD would be going. And yes, I have thinner ones (BAD and 2007 SE).

I agree with moonwilson, the handle size issue is as important to me as 1/2 to 1 inch blade length.
