Ganga Ram reconsiders

During my conversation with Kami and Gelbu last night I discovered that Ganga Ram had changed his mind about making the Ganga Ram Specials in his own little village shop. He and his 70 year old helper had just arrived from their village and had started work on their project in Shop 2 only yesterday.

Although I had mixed emotions about this project and wanted in some nostalgic way to see old Ganga produce these khukuris in his own shop this is better. This is the biggest order Ganga has ever received in his 80 years. Although we agreed to supply 3 or 4 young, strong "swingers" for Ganga to help him pound steel there was no place easily available for them to eat and sleep. Also, getting any needed materials would take Ganga four days round trip -- this for some brass that might be needed or perhaps a new chisel. Ganga and his helper talked it over and decided that Shop 2 simply made more sense.

So, now young Gelbu has four kamis in Shop 2 with a combined experience of more than 200 years and I can see from the Gelbu specials they insisted on making not only are they making him some of the best khukuris in the world but they are also helping him make administrative decisions, too.

Worry about Gelbu and the shop while Kami is gone?-- With those four old kamis around for advice and consent that's one thing I will NOT worry about.

I told Gelbu to try to document Ganga's progress with pix and notes. We will see.

This is great news Uncle!!!
Now we know he will eat right, get the sleep he needs and not hurt himself by trying to get this order out.
It would be wonderful if he makes enough off this order to retire if he wants.

I would bet these are all going to be magical Kuhkuris as well.
It looks as if you will get yours after all.
That makes me very happy in itself!

The civilized man sleeps behind locked doors in the city while the naked savage sleeps (with a knife) in a open hut in the jungle.

That is good news. They should be making some unique, one of a kind khukuris that I will be most anxioius to see.

(I reqally dislike those faces but don't know another good way to express my happiness.)
I very much look foward to my new magical khukuri. The question remains though, how many will arrive versus how many are shipped?
Is there some way you have worked out to insure that they are not "misplaced"? I know in a previous thread some ideas were brought up. There has got to be a way to get all of these treasures from this master to you.
Perhaps with all of the talent on this forum, an idea or two will surface.
Thanks for the news, Bill.

What? Another knife? Don't you have enough of those things already?
How many does one person need?
And just what are you going to do with this one that you can't do with the others?
What is the purpose of all these knives anyhow??

It is a madhouse there now in both apartment and shop. Kamis, resident village kamis, friends, strangers, neighbors all come to both shop and apartment -- each must look at the "magic" khukuris and others and make their respective comments.

Gelbu said he must get an office and shipping area where he can store the khukuris under lock and key and get some quiet.

When the khukuris leave the hands of the HI people and begin their journey we must pray for safe arrival. We have no choice.

Many thanks for well wishes, all.

Excellent. Should be much easier on him and I'm sure the exchange of information will help everyone.

I was a little concerned for his health when he was considering taking on a project of this size at his own shop on his own.

Pakcik Bill - if you have any chance - please inform GR that his Khukuris are going to be own by many owners from different countries, different professions and different backgrounds around the globe! His name as well as HI's will be remembered for a long long time - maybe for several generation! His knowledge, experience, blood, sweat and tear will be blended together in those GRS Khukuris - insyaa-Allaah!we will always appreciate his & HI's effort.

Thanks all. I think Ganga will do okay for a month or so in the Kathmandu Valley. I am trying to get notes and pix of him in action. We'll see. At least he is in a place where people can look after him and I think that is a plus for a fellow his age.

Uncle Bill,

How sweet it is that the "young" kamis in the shop will be seeing and touching the old masters work...perhaps it will ignite an even stronger flame in their hearts for their work they do

Take care,

John, working with these old masters is a great benefit for the young apprentices. For years I was afraid much of this old master kami skill would be lost. Now I am hopeful it will stay alive for awhile.

I do not know if this stroke of luck is by accident or design but I am very pleased to see what is happening in shop 2.
