Ganza Scrap Max offerings....have arrived!!!!

I wish I had ordered a set of these.

Thin, hard, slicing demons.

Res-C may not be the beauty queen, it is the Olympic track and field star. She is fast, light, firm, bouncy, compact, powerful and fun to use!

It is so nice to know that I'm not the only one who sees the analogies between a knife and a woman, and yes, both can draw blood.

Congrats on the Ganza and on the quick delivery!!

Now, I am trying, REALLY trying to understand the joy in these super basic looking knives. I know they will cut well, I know they will stand up to abuse, but they look like a set of basic steak knives. No cool handles, coatings, blade shapes, notable size, nothing. You see an FBM, you hold an FBM, you understand the love for the FBM. Same with TGLB, Moab, KZ, etc, etc, etc!! These just don't seem to fit and even then, why the same level of excitement for them vs the AA? Do you feel the "Power Of Grayskull" when you hold up your Scrapmax???

I know this is just me partially being a dick, but I still want to know.

BY THE POWER OF ELMAX!!!

Hello ALL, the storms killed power and even with generators, the cell towers and such in my area were dead in the water. Worse than that, a fiber optic line cut had me off-line for the last 29 hours or so.

Ok, Havoc, to help you understand why the Basic knives are awesome to own....

They are packed with a lot of functionality and practicality in a very valuable package. Res-C rocks as a shock absorbing and grippy handle material. Elmax excels as a stainless blade steel. These Scrap Max knives are much like a scalpel in sharpness.
Another reason they appeal to me is because I have a deep understanding of knives. I also understand that various people like different things and one person's knife philosophy or need may not apply to another. It's all good.

So, in the spirit of keeping things light, fun and not trying to offend or start any BS, I had a little fun with a Scrap Max to show you how handy these little guys can be...they are capable of so much more...but...

I can see a bit of what Havoc says in my own "initial" view of the Wardog and Scrapmax handles ... I looked at them and thought they did'nt seem as proportional and balanced asthetically as the old Basic grips. If you look at the old Basic series grips and older Scrapyard releases such as the Basic 5 and the Dumpster Mutt ... the handles and blade length have an element of symmetry about them. Similar in many ways to the Ratmandu. Blade and handle length balance. On the larger lengths of the Basic 7 and 9 a larger grip was done and they look just as good.

However for many guys with large hands there were a few comments over the years that the smaller Basic 5 grip and the grip on the Dumpster Mutts were a bit too small. The change to the War Dog and Scrapmax grip resolves this. In the end it is about "practicality".... and from Dan's business plan also "price to performance".

For my part the Basic series "shines" best in the larger models as this is where the weight saving becomes really noticeable and there is no loss of capability either on these models when it comes to chopping. The only full tang blade that I would rate with my Basic 9 as an ideal "all rounder" on weight is my SAR8. It is heavier but is still noticeably light ... particularly when compared to my NMSFNO or my BWM LE or FSH's which I have owned. Relevant "carryable" weight kicks in at this level but ironically in the smaller thinner knives I am perfectly happy to go with a full tang design for strength as the "weight" issue is'nt relevant at all.

Some knife designs that Jerry has done in the smaller full tang range are also some of my favourite designs of any knife in this size. I am particularly fond of the Ratmandu on the looks front. If a thinner Elmax blade were offered in a Ratmandu style with thicker grips to compensate for the thinner tang ... giving the chance to put some very eye catching grips on them ... this stye of knife would appeal to me much more

This being said ... I got into the "user" benefits of thin hard steels before Dan went into his Elmax range and am pretty well supplied with some nice thin slicers that have special steels which can take high Rc HT's and keep on "working" ... they cost "wayyyy" over the $100 price point though ... many many times more than that in some cases ... but they do have it in the "looks" department too ... and have a fair bit of time invested in them by the makers ... so I can see why they are charging more ... but in the end it was the steel they used that sold me on these knives.

Here is a pic from a thread I did a while back comparing Infi to other steels in the smaller sized knives ...

Some of the knives are not really "thin grinds" ... this shows the spine comparisons of a Basic 5, RMD, a Japanese Custom by Itou and my Scrapyard S5LE ...

But this knife by Dusty Moulton is a thin grind with a Devin Thomas Damascus Stainless Steel blade ...

Hardened to Rc 62 IIRC this knife takes a hell of an edge and keeps it ... but at ten times the price of a Scrapmax which will likely do the same ... it makes you realise there are a good number of plus points with a Scrapmax ... although I know which one I like the best "to look at" ...

Got mine today. Insanely fast shipping. I can see why it's a love or hate with the handles, in my case, love :D

My Scrapmaxs came in today, so I figured this thread could use another comparison pic. Came very sharp, by Beef, and looking forward to using them on some game. My better half got a 460 allso, to go with her original Elmax. She was wanting a little more length for kitchen duty. hehe don't go there. Took my Weiner Dog away from her because she wasn't using it enough.:p

I have the " blade " scrap max at 3 3/4". How is the 5" version with such a thin blade? Does it seem destined to broken if not used with care?

mine should be here Monday and I'm really excited about it. I can't wait to see how they slice vs my spydercos, and how the ELMAX compares to M390.

I kinda wish I got more than one of each, but that's just the steel lust aggravated by anticipation.

It should be fine with any normal use. Don't think you want to pry a leg bone out of it's socket or anything like that though.

For those of you who got your knives, did you get tracking info? My card was charged thursday but I haven't received a tracking #.

I got a tracking number Friday. I think it dinged Monday or Tuesday but didn't clear right away for some reason

Ok thanks, that means my knives haven't shipped yet. No big deal I actually didn't expect to even get charged so soon.

That's just awesome!! And thanks for the honest reply.

However, feel free to give me a little BS if you want, I was kind of asking for it. Just make sure it's funny :)

Yes, the elmax is definitely a winner and my new favorite of all of the scrapyard offerings, especially the little 340 wardenmax which is a great little slicer.

Here is what the three different versions look like up close.

They are lightweight little buggers all ranging from 3.25-3.45oz and a combined weight of just 10.15oz for the trio. The Blade version is the lightest of the three.

My only complaint is the butt of the handle would be much better if it were rounded so the corners wouldn't poke into your side, but that is easily fixed as long as you have two of these little slicers... or a razor to trim the res-c. :D

I improved the edge Garth had applied to my 460 on Friday night. I used a couple finer grit belts and then leather with green compound. It's now a mirror, and easily push cuts newsprint!!!

I used it in the kitchen all weekend and I really love this blade!!! Easily took everything thrown at it in stride. This is easily the best stainless steel I've ever used. The only knife I can slice a lemon thinner with is about half as thick as the scrapmax 460, and that is saying a LOT! My only regret now is that I didn't buy more than one.

I love the 340 too. This is my first experience with ELMAX steel. I cant wait to see more pictures of people pushing them to their limits though.

Wow this thread is 2 months old and I am still waiting for my Kill Devil Hawk. Did mine slip through the cracks or is anyone else still waiting?

Nope, we're all still waiting. They've only just gotten around to shipping the Blade show hawk orders. :o

I just got both of the rattle hawks I ordered at Blade and a Gladius I ordered several months ago. I did get the two Ratman's from the last Ganza a month ago, but I am still waiting on everything else including kill devils.

So, my point isn't to bitch about the wait, but to let you know you are not alone. The wait actually lets me space out the payments and gives me something to look forward to, so I am not complaining :)
