Ganzo steel

Good luck drilling the liners!

Are they hardened? I was planning to skeletonize them drilling a few holes first and then using a die grinder with a carbide burr to clean it and enlarge the holes. I don't think the carbide is going to slip on the steel no matter how hard it is...

Yes, the liners are hardened.

Yes, indeed... This afternoon we succeded skeletonizing the liners of a Ganzo G717. My plan was to drill out as much as I could and then proceed with the carbide burr in the die grinder... Drilling showed that they were hardened, but we went through anyway. Carbide ate the steel like butter and we ended up saving 22gr. Right now it weights 130 grams, which is 2gr heavier than the Spyderco Military.

We did this on my friends knife. I plan on doing the same thing on mine and will make sure of taking a few pictures and posting them here. I was wondering if I could use my wood router table to mill some G10 from the inside of the scales, That could help us saving even more weight.

Didnt know they were hardened steel LOL:).My buddy works at machine shop and he will drill it out no problem!

For sure!

We did it with a semi-new HSS drill bit. It is hard (no mild steel for sure) but not impossible. But your buddy is going to mill it anyway, I don't think he is going to bother drilling it.

Anyone with a Ganzo and propper tools... I strongly advise you to do it! It changes totally from being a BRICK to being something you can actually carry and enjoy.

BTW... regarding the springs of the G-Lock (Ganzo version of the Axis Lock).... I know that Benchmade does not supply the springs and I haven't found any Ganzo springs online. I have found some posts online in other forums about people making the springs themselves. One even talked about a post here in BF about how to make them... but I couldn't locate it.

Does anyone know which is the thread they were talking about???

yes, without milled liners its more like a brick, other problem with Ganzo knives is handle designs, edges are not rounded and they create a lot of strain on hand, even on light cutting.

If you favour function over aesthetics you could always round the edges with some sand paper. When I finally skeletonize the liners on mine I plan on smoothing a little bit the G10 right under the pocket clip... because it is so rough now that it is chewing my pocket seams like crazy. I don't discard rounding the outher edges of the handle slabs a little bit as well.

The g753 is so much better than other ones, amazing value for money, and easy to carry.Ill just give away the other ones I bought to my friends as I have no use for them(heavy, and handle ergonomics I do not like). The blades on them are very good as is their steel.
