Today was the 2nd annual neighborhood garage sale. I was not even aware there was an annual neiborhood garage sale...lol. It turns out it starts about 9 am and runs through noon on this one Saturday each year.
I had decided to fly my slope glider at the local hill, as the wind was out of the South East at around 10 mph. Turns out I never made it to the hill. I started seeing all these garage sales and thought to myself...I've read somewhere on bladeforums that you guys find the sweetest deals at flea markets, online sites, and garage sales!!

My intention set...I set out on my first collecting sojourn.

After about 5 or so stops with no luck...my luck changed. This stop was a wonderful old lady sitting behind an old desk with one of those old metal cash boxes. I looked around the tables and then as I was about to leave I smiled at her and said, I was looking for pocket knives but I guess you don't have any...thanks anyway. She smiled and said ...yes I do ...I keep them next to me...right here. I approached her and she pointed to a box on her desk with about 5 pocket knives in little baggies. Gold. Two sweet old patina jewels were staring right at me. The other an old boy scout knife...turned out with a broken blade...The other an old Victorinox...well worn...too worn...and a multi-tool...old...worn...but too big for my taste. I zeroed in on the two jewels...I opened every blade...yes...sweet...patina...jewels...I'll take them.

Then next stop turned up no knives but some great conversation with a wonderful gentleman who collects knives as well.

My next stop...I parked and walked up to what looked like a promising sale. Lots of jewerly display cases....looks good I said under my breath...getting the rush of anticipation. I approached a lady and asked..any possiblity of a pocket knife or two...she thought for a second and said, I have an old thing back here in the garage in a box..kinda a knife...wanna look. Sure I said. We walked back in the garage and she handed me an antique looking box. It read...Northfield Cutlery Co. NORTHFIELD. CONN. UN-X-LD. No.....way....oh and she threw in a machete too...
The Case XX peanut is sweet...I love it. Dont know what the scales are made of...maybe delrin or ebony. I need to do a little more research...it said on my baggie...1970's. Thr other jigged bone has no makers mark but its sweet and I believe to be a cattleman jack.
The straight razor is sweet and is razor sharp.

What a sweet way to spend the morning. Spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning and sharpening. Pocket worn and sharp...what more could you ask for...I am grateful.

Nice score!!!!!

I would have done the same thing, the machete is cool too! I did not hear what you paid for them? I am not a straight razor guy, but that piece would change me into one, especially with that box.

WOW!! What a great score!! That Northfield Razor looks almost brand new! What a treasure!

Holy cow!!

I agree. Nice haul. And I don't get into razors either, but that is beautiful!

Congrats! Nice to see those things get into the hands of someone who appreciates them. Sometimes that makes a difference to the sellers, too. Nice going. Let us know if you get the razor up and running!

Thanks guys...the straight razor does look brand new in person as well. Maybe two little blood stains on the blade. Handle is beautiful as well. Could not pass it up for 10 bucks. I could not be more pleased with all of the blades. It sure would be interesting if someone could identify the make of the unmarked cattleman slipjack.

Thanks newadventure...I will carry them with joy. I'll let you know if I dare to honor the razor...lol

Great to read, but man it hacks me off :D whenever I go to garage sales, theres not a knife to be seen, man..that cut throat is in excellent condition, the good ol' un-X-ld.... what a beaut

That is awesome! Enjoy! I am not a straight razor fan but you have to respect that one! EXCELLENT!

That razor is a really decent find. You should show that off in the Razors&scissors forum, lot of interest there in cut-throats:D

Oh and those knives look like a catch too:thumbup:

Great score and what a haul.......nothing better...............and here all I find are knives with blades that look like the last thing they were used for was a toothpick..................

At list you have garage sales to go to :D so there is hope. It's not so common here, so I am looking green with envy at all these great finds people are posting, like the ones Gevonovich found, pure gold :)

Nice finds for sure. I always ask but never come up with anything. On the other hand, a friend of mine's father has a couple booths at a flea market and last Saturday I went with him to see what was for sale. Mostly junk for sure, but I was looking for knives and axes. TONS of old beater pocket knives and beat up axes, and then I noticed a vendor with four pearl handled gems. One was a Wadsworth, a Challenge, an unnamed silver fruit knife with a gorgeous handle with a carved flower and an IXL lobster. At $25 I could not pass up the IXL, looks to have been carried very little and used less. Blades are full and screaming sharp, the pearl is magnificent and has many colors when adjusted in the light. The stamping leads me to believe it was made 1920-25. Here's a link to my photobucket if you want to check them out:

edit: just picked up the IXL, the 2006 forum knife is just shown for a size comparison.
