Garand vs. Springfield M1A

fnFAL all the way. Kit prices are way up and the 308 nato is more expensive than .06 ammo.
A good tip here is to check with your local VFW, mine offered me a very nice garand for 500.00 (parade rifle) .

As much as I would love to pick up an M1A, it does not feel like the right choice. I am primarily a pistol shooter. I just don't have much opportunity to shoot rifles, or shotguns for that matter. Most of the ranges here are for handgun calibers. The classes available are handgun-oriented, with the rare course thrown in. If I ever do gain skill with firearms, it'll probably be with handguns.

I do see the sense in having a good rifle though. But I don't want to spend a lot of money on a rifle that'll hardly be used, even if it'll be kept oiled and ready should the need ever arise. The Garand is a fine weapon, and $1000 will get me a Service Grade from the CMP along with 1500 rounds and several clips. That should be enough to get me started.

I don't believe 06 ammo is cheaper in general than 08. Maybe a select batch of 06 is cheaper, but overall the .308 is going to be cheaper because it is of more recent manufacture due to NATO needs. I've also heard the curious belief 06 ammo is expensive; that is not quite true either. It remains a mainstay of the civilian sporting market, and there is still, still surplus ammo showing up.

Since you are limited to 10 rounds that negates one of the biggest advantages the M1A has over the Garand.

You'd have a winner which ever rifle you'd have.

I loved my Garands and am sorry I don't have one today.

I'd be hesitant to reccomend a norinco or poly. I'd get a poly over norinco, (made to higher standards). The chinese sometimes have metal hardness issues, though that may be a thing of the past.

The M1 Garand is an awesome weapon. Did you get one yet? If so, lets hit the rifle range! :)

Im sure I read somewhere that M1's can be fitted with polymer stocks, does anyone know if this is an urban myth or just an underground custom thing?

I have 4 m1's from the CMP, but I got them @ $289... before they went crazy with the prices. Get your C&R they are well worth it.

Well after looking at all the pics posted on this thread maybe y'all will like this poster too.;) :p

Let me know what y'all think? Do y'all suppose this is an M-14 Sniper Rifle?

This is the first one I've ever seen with the finned piece on top of the barrel, wonder what the deal is with it, anyone know?

Also what's the device with the wire coming out the back?
Whatever it is it's not standard issue stuff is it?

Seeing as how I'm a lazy Bastid I really like the idea of using only three muscles to squeeeeezzzzzze the, "Make it go BOOM Device."  :D

Hmmmm, Looks like an M-14 to me.
The finned piece is for mounting things on. IIRC some people call it a "rail" or forward optic mount. the device with the wire, which i believe is a laser pointer, is mounted on the side "rail". I don't believe they are standard issue, although most of your snipers and special op's teams will probably have them fitted to their weapon.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Yvsa,
That is an M-14 Designated Marksman Rifle. It seems The Corps decided to de-mothball M-14's, scope em up, mount Picittany rails on em, and issue em to Marksmen to give the troops some intermediate distance accuracy at the squad level. As Karda says, that is a laser pointing device (most likely infared, not visible spectrum) mounted on the side rail.
Accuracy and punch were never the problem with the M-14 in Viet-Nam, weight of ammo load, weapon weight, and overall size of the weapon in the jungle environment were the issues adopting the AR/M16 weapons family sought to address.

I have shot Beretta BM62's, Garand's, SKS's, M1A's, FAL's and H&K's.
I love the Beretta, and if TSHTF I would grab one, but the cost is darn high now. Mags run $85.00 to $125.00 each.
M1A's are up in price too, and have "features" I don't like. I have seen two bolt rollers fail on well maintained rifles.
H&K's just don't feel right to me. Too top heavy or something.
FN's feel long and slow to move to me.
The SKS is a carbine in 7.62x39, without the range, accuracy or power of the others. But they are cheap and will run forever. In some ways I like them better than the AK family.

For the money, the Garand is the best now.

The en-bloc clip will not be added to a banned list. 30-06 is no more in price than 7.62x51 in surplus ammo.
That "slow" in-bloc clip is actually fast to feed into the rifle, and it is no slower to re-load the clips with loose rounds than to load up a magazine with loose rounds. Yes, you need the clips, but that's how the ammo is kept, no worse than five round stripper clips for the 7.62x51. They are only $0.50 to buy if you keep your eyes open at shows. Buy the ammo from CMP in clips to save time.
A friend shot a combat type rifle match with a "Tanker" Garand, his total load time on the move was in line with the 20 shot mag guys. More often, but quicker.
You can get a "scout rifle" hand guard to mount optics, just like the M1A/M-14.
You can add the 16" bayonet to keep the zombies a bit further away :-)
John Wayne used one :-)

The BM-59's are fine rifles, this is true. I have a friend who had a BM-62(the same thing without the big clunky muzzle device)that was an absolute badass rifle. He sold it after a neck injury/surgery forced him to get rid of all hard-recoiling rifles.

My only complaint is the price/availability of magazines for them. M1A mags can be found for $25(at least until the gun-buying insanity started again..), but you'd have to shuck out almost twice that for BM-59/62 mags. Spare parts may be an issue in the future, as well. Good quality spares for the M1A are drying up already, and there are many more of that rifle is the US than the BM's.

My 17 year old son is considering ditching his CAR-15 we built a few years ago for a Garand. Not sure what we're gonna do about that yet, as we built the CAR-15 as a project when he was 11....
