Garden time!

I need to do raised beds too. Last year was so wet and my garden sits in a relatively low spot, it was a PITA. It’s been so wet again this year that I haven’t even tilled it and am probably going to just accept my beating. I’m thinking about no tilling a few rows of corn at least and letting the wife plant the rest in flowers. There is something to be said about producing your own food from the ground without using chemicals and all the other things I’d rather not eat. Pretty satisfying.

Last year the wife and I had 16 tomato plants and neither one of us likes tomatoes. They did great, I was giving bushel baskets of maters away to anyone who would take them.

Wish i lived closer to you lol. Real tomatoes actually have flavor the stuff you buy at the store not soo much

I'm in the middle of the city, so I don't have a ton of room, but I still do a bit of gardening. This year is mostly herbs and hot peppers, with a few potato, tomato and zucchini plants where I can fit them in.
My girlfriend came home with some upside down hanging tomato pot thingie, anyone else ever use one of these?

I have been seeing some community gardens going in ... mainly raised beds... awsome to see and the recent jump in cost of produce was kinda shocking.... i didnt realize till i went to a regular market the other day as FM prices have been fairly stedy

I wanted to do a garden this year but the deer are so bad around my house I would need to create a compound to keep them out. Hopefully they will be whittled down a little more this winter so I can have one next year. My father in law has a nice one so we get a variety of stuff from him through the season.

I would like to do a little gardening myself, but the soil where I'm at is terrible for growing much of anything. I've tried, but it is mostly sand and impossible to keep wet. I would have to have black dirt moved in to pull it off. My father-in-law grows one heck of a garden and gives us more than we can use, so I've quit trying at my house.

Heh, then consider it bait.

I get deer and rabbits all the time in my yard wanting at my pathetic little garden, but usually settle for the clover (another good reason to have it).

So i been working on my garden lately , also identifying local edibles and seeing about adding them around my property... so who else is working on theres?

heres one of the set ups im working with now due to my situation.

My garden got trashed by kids who pass through from school, even though its fenced off  I like yours though! very clean and reusable stuff! I like it alot :D

there all trashed containers i got from other places and sterilized and clean and zipped holes ... i try to reuse as much as i can. the other up side is i have a few plants i can bring in this winter and keep going ..

my total budget including tools is 500 bucks this year ... so far i figure i can get it to pay for itself in food production ...

Right now im trying to reseach native plants to the area to see if i can get those going as well...

sorry to hear about your garden man that sucks... maybe you can reclaim a few plants in a container or two...

We have a raised garden as we're basically living on solid rock. I have some peppers and tomato plants, cucumbers, zuchini, okra, mustard, and a couple rows of corn.

We ate some peppers and mustard greens last night.

I wish I could work more on my garden, but unfortunately there is too much wildlife to contend with. The deer and elk destroy the young trees and eat the flowers of my tulips (only the flower heads, not the stems or leaves, go figure). Some bushes are eaten all the way to the ground during the winter and have to restart every single year with less than 1 inch off the ground. In the spring, the hanging flower pots (put there to keep them safe and out of reach) end up with birds nests in them and the rabits eat any vegetables that we are foolish enough to plant. I am seriously considering xeriscaping the yard... perhaps just pour concrete everywhere.:grumpy:

those pests arnt to hard to take care of cisco ... just need a fence ... i have tons of rabbits and deer and other things

i use a double fence on my main garden area. and it works pretty good. also a little hair from a hair cut spread around the fence line barried works ok. i put up a "rabbit fence" and its about 6 inchs in the ground all the way around , with some chicken wire to shore up the protection ... if it ever came to it i would put up an electric runner or two. .... or a good rifle in season

for a few berries and stuff i put up bird netting tents , and preditor decoys.

If any of you drink coffee, save your used grounds. The grounds are a nitrogen supplement for your soil. You can add it to plants and your compost/soil mixture. I drink coffee every morning and have added the grounds to my compost for years. Worms love the coffee grounds, and you will have some nice fat worms to work the soil, and some live bait to fish with. I use the grounds and filter together, since the paper filter will break down as well. Tea (bags) works well also.

yea compost is good stuff... i been looking into a couple worm tubs or a way to get more for my garden next year

Is that all that have a little garden kicking around?

i just put up a security camera and working on a deer/rabbit fence doing some explanding this week end and getting cages and trelles and maybe bird netting soon as well

very nice Jeff.

Heres a question for every one : Why do you garden
for me:
1. relaxing-rewarding-satifying
2. Heritage - we have had a family garden for as long as i can remeber. i stopped for a few years and missed it.
3. Connection to my food - I moved away from it for a while and started not carring about my food. now i do a lot.
4. Fresh good for you food- cooking is easier when you start with good base
5. its part of my long term survival preps... and i dont wanna be the guy trying to put up his dome tent for the first time in a thunder storm.

Hits the nail on the head.

I'm in Upstate NY. Still a slight threat of frost. So, garden goes in on Memorial day. Nothing more gratifying than working the soil with your hands and seeing food come out.

This year, my RC-4 will be my garden companion.

got some work done taking a little break ... kinda wanna keep this alive pics ill take in a couple of days when i do some more repotting and get some more stuff planted.

so keep it comming guys.

Well small update added some more plants , and got some local trading going on , have a friend grafting pawpaws and mulburrys maybe they will be ready by the end of season for next year to start off... so thats exciting.

if it stops raining ill be repotting today and working on my beds gotta go pick up some more gravel and seal up some of the fence holes ... putting in a second fence soon and a gate and trying to rehab
