Gary Gygax passed today; he was 69

Sad to see him go. R.I.P. sir.

Remember Top Secret and Gamma World?

Over the years I've been DM more than a player. The last couple of years I've been a player more often. Our groups is myself, my wife (I married a geek), her nephew and a camping buddy. We still play a couple of times a month. Right now I'm playing a Dwarven Barbarian. I have friends that play World of Warcraft but I like the human interaction. We play the game, eat pizza, BBQ when the weather is good, talk movies and music. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

I didn't even know who Gary was before reading this thread. I never played D&D, but plenty of people I know did. I have to salute the guy for bringing about the RPG to a whole new level, so to speak.

I play World of Warcraft myself, have a 70 on Akama and level 30's spread through other servers to play with friends who have moved away, or are back in the LA area where I grew up.

I like the idea of playing in groups though. Much like the First Person Shooter LAN parties of yesteryear now that RPG/MMORPGS are no longer considered as "terminally geeky" as they used to be.

I'm consistently surprised by who plays WoW.

I read and editorial that outlines how Gary Gygax was a hack who created the Hobgoblin Holocaust. It is an opinion that holds a lot of merit for what it is, but fails to realize the role that GG played, that of introducing many to the whole idea of roleplaying, even if the orcs had to die to do it.

Sorry to hear about his passing.

I've been playing in-person RPG's for nearly 18 years. I remember a sermon or 2 about how evil it was, and he was, but I always figured those who had real issues with it had real issues no matter what, like not being able to see the line between reality and fantasy. I'd still play if I could, but with kids and about zero gamers I know w/in easy distance, I'm limited (by my slow computer) to Neverwinter Nights Diamond.

DM for several years, guest DM in my last group occasionally, and player primarily in the last group. Monks and wizards were preferred, although I think I lack the forward thinking ability to make a really good wizard. Cant play chess either, and in game that can kill ya, several times...

Only played Gamma World once, but I've always like the apocolyptic/post nuclear war setting. How about Shadow Run? One of my favorite 2 games.
