Hi just a question. has any one tried using a length of insulated chimney as a forge body? its rated to 1000 to 1500 degrees and stainless steel! if you lined the inner with a refractory it should work well no? just thinking it would be a great insulator also seeing its already insulated, add some refractory to inside and it should rock!

You should line it with 1" K-wool and a coat of satanite. That makes a very nice forge . The only reason people don't regularly recommend it is the expense of 6" chimney pipe compared to any round tubular object. If you have some for free, by all means use it.

It would work well as far as insulating goes but the inside would need to be beefed up with refractory, like the other guys have already stated.
