Hey to all on bladeforums .my names jason .i am banging steel on and off the last 5 yrs .i have recently made another basic forge out of a dumped mini barrell barbeque its just fireclay a copper pipe and a robbed from my missus hair dryer .its ok for small stuff but a lil messy i have close neighbours so i would like to change up to a gas forge .apoligies if this is on the wrong section as this is my first post on here .the 2 models i have been looking at are the majestic 2 burner or the diamondback single burner i dont want to make a gas forge because i am unfamiliar with gas usage and id rather use a forge that has been made by a pro .any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated i have a massive stockpile of 5160 to beat the crap out of i am mostly interested in making bowies .seaxs and the odd sword cheers jason

I would take a look at the Atlas Graham forge for general knifemaking. It is a pretty good forge for the price, and properly made.

If you want to go with a bigger forge that will allow blacksmithing and larger objects, look at the NC Tool Co Whisper lowboy (or one of their other forges). I have used a Lowboy for over 20 years to make knives.

Thanks stacy i will check them both out i wont be ordering until august hence why i came here for opinions and suggestions thanks again for ur input

I have the Atlas Graham, and I love it. It runs good on your run of the mill BBQ propane tank, and you get a good amount of forge time out of each tank. Does a fine job for knocking around scrap 5160. I also recently welded up my first damascus and my first San mai billets in it as well, so it can get cooking if desired. I considered trying to make my own, but I wasn’t super confident I’d be successful. When I priced out all the things I would need to make my own it really wasn’t a big money difference compared to just buying the Atlas, so it made the decision pretty easy.

I will admit the nc tool was the first gas forge i have been lookin at and i have emailed jantz supply as theyre offering the nc tool knifemaker 2 burner model for 560 which is nearly 100 dollars cheaper and considering im in ireland 150 or so for shipping .is there any particular reason ye favour the lowboy .as in versatility or any reasons just out of curiosity and also thank you for your input and time jason

Thanks for all the input lads .its appreciated any reason ye personally chose the lowboy .i am after e mailing jantz as they are offerjng the knifemaker 2 burner model from nc for 560 dollars which is nearly 100 dollars less than nc themselves .which is a nice saving considering postage to ireland is pretty steep .thanks again jason

The NCT knifemaker is good, but the wider chamber and side door on the Lowboy allow it to be used for other projects and things that won't fit through the 2X3 knife ports or 4X4 end on the Knifemaker forge.

If you are only going to make knives, the knifemaker is fine.

Was thinking as much i am interested in making only knives tbh.i have no other blacksmithin experience who knows i may get into it eventually .i was beginning to collect knives again and just stopped myself to concentrate on get a bladesmith setup i have a few hammers n tongs im not sure how to upload a picture of the blade i am working on at the moment its pretty long .i used to own a 70 yr old british alcosa portable forge it was large n i couldnt bring it with me when movin so i had to sell it now i am just using a small anvil i got on ebay and a charcoal /wood forge made with just a hair dryer n old barrel bbq n a bit of fireclay its works well enough but i have always wanted a gas one cheers for your time stacy i have seen some of your knives online also and they r beautiful how long are you smithing yourself
