I have recently started making my first few knives and soon they will be ready to heat treat. I have to decide wether to send them away or make a forge. I would rather make my own forge. Ive seen some made of fire bricks with holes drilled for a burner and think this would be easy for me to make. Im wondering if a propane tiger torch( hooks up to a barbeque bottle) will work as a burner. I am also wondering if gas forges need any air movment from a blower or if the gas moving is enough.

It's all about BTU output per volume. The biggest blowtorch from the hardware stores puts out around 5000 BTU. The smallest Tiger Torch puts out 300,000 BTU. A simple 2 brick forge requires around 30,000 BTU. A propane tank sized forge with a 5" chamber requires around 100,000 BTU.

I build burners for both these sizes. My burners are also the simplest design, and the lowest price, and the best selling for knifemakers.
