I'm new to the idea of trying to forge my own blades (knife, tomahawk heads etc.). Which do you experienced bladesmiths prefer, coal forges or gas forges and why? Or maybe a better question is which one you would recommend to someone is is looking to start smithing hawks and knives? Thanks to anyone who has input and can speak from experience! I much appreciate the advice!.....Mark

The gas forge is able to be set at a certain heat output. You can control the temperature of your steel much easier. It lights right up so you can start forging in short order.

You can store the solid fuel for a coal/coke/charcoal forge a bit easier. If you have the wood you can make your own fuel.

Propane availability vs coal availability should be a consideration too. For me propane is just better for me $ and availability and control ability of heat...
