Gas station, liquor store, smoke shop knives

I'd rather be seen buying tampons than be seen buying a gas station knife.

I own some cheap knives, but I'd be embarrassed to have anyone, even a total stranger, see me buy a gas station knife, as if I were someone who didn't know how crappy such knives are.

Props to you Stabman (and anyone else who buys such knives) for not caring what other people think. 😁

I feel like buying a knife at the gas station or a smoke shop is the same as if I were to buy a screwdriver or pliers from the dollar store. Might it work in a pinch? Probably. But I have a box full of snap on stuff at work, why not use the better tool. Same goes for knives, if I have a $350 ZT in my back pocket everyday why use a mystery steel gas station knife with the ergonomics of a 2x4?

Can I interest you in a flea market knife? It says black ops on the blade and uses skateboard grip tape for traction on the handle, with integrated seat belt cutter and detachable window breaker🍰

Grew up in Southie been down here for 31 yrs Never looked back ~ I have seen a small collection of some China knives at Cape Cod Harley Davidson but that's about it, I am so happy our state looks after us so well, you could get a nasty cut with a sharp knife and those AR15 rifles well ! They just look way to dangerous and are really scary in the movies
:)
Haha indeed. Wish we had a dedicated brick and mortar knife shop somewhere around here. Buying online is extremely convenient but it would be nice to be able to go into a shop and handle them in person before buying sometimes.

The lack of caring about the thoughts of others is a powerful thing.

I managed to break a SOG assisted Tanto.... A gas station knife wouldn't last one week with me... Lol.
Years back I used to carry flea market beauties, they lasted maybe six months max.... And they were always, always dull.....

Pretty sure that gas station fixed blade would survive being used.
Also pretty sure the edge would wear off so quickly I'd have to EDC a sharpening stone along with it. :D

Gas station knives aren't good for use generally, but let's be honest; most people who carry a knife don't use it anyway. ;)

People carrying and not using... Ouch, you made my head hurt Stab.
You're probably right, their knives are better lint collectors than cutting tools.
I can't recall a day in years that I wasn't in the hospital that I didn't use my knife to cut something....

I find something to use my knives on each day, but many days I have to make the conscious effort. :(
In the past I have worked jobs where a knife was occasionally (or often!) required.
My previous and current job have zero knife use.

But as a knife enthusiast, I'll continue to search out situations where a knife can be of use.

I consider gas station knives to be a slice of Americana. Always amazed at the creativity involved in the designs. I get that they are “cheap” and I get that most are primarily made in third world countries. Nonetheless, I always take the time to look when confronted with a display in a truck stop or tourist spot. And, as a “connoisseur”, I’ve found the various truck stops along I-10 from Texas to Florida to be gas station knife heaven!

I actually had a father growing up so thankfully I learned at a young age not to go down that road. 😉

I do have a buddy that I’ve caught with a gas station knife, and since then I gave him my old Cammilus Heat (which he broke) a Kershaw Cryo, a BK-9 (which he lost) and a Himilayan Imports VUK.

His father died when he was young so I’m trying to help him find the right path. 😁

Sounds like he needs a Responsibility lesson too. 🤔🫣🤔

Sounds like someone who should stick with gas station knives...🤔

This. You know, I was thinking about the other day how back in the 70's and 80's to most people pocket knives were considered disposable. You would buy something like an Imperial Barlow or Colonial for cheap, drop it in your pocket, and cut, scrape, stab, throw it in the dirt, pry with it, etc. Eventually you would lose it, it would rust up so you couldn't get the blade open, or one of the blades would snap off, and then you would throw it in a junk drawer and go buy another. Alot of people still have this mindset towards knives, and for those people gas station knives and cheap disposable stuff is probably the best play for them.

Exactly.

Although a cheap Swiss Army Knife or Mora would do them pretty good also. :)

But the way some folks are, the knives I saw in a bin at a gas station for $5 are probably the best bet...

I saw a homeless guy yesterday trying to use a bike with a baby/pet carriage in tow as a scooter and he had a whopping half-leg sized fixie on his belt, passing by I couldn't make out the type, but if I had to guess it would be Elk Ridge or some super gas station post apoc battle blade, cheaper than unsharpenable 440a. Didn't stop this king arthur from toting that Excalibur however

Yeah, see a lot of that around here too.
