Gatco, DMT or Lansky

I know nothing about kitchen cutlery - I use a pull through or an electric sharpener on them.

You should be horsewhipped.
Can't you hear your kitchen knives screeching in agony as you pull them through carbide V's? Have you no pity for the pain you inflict on them scouring their sides with motorized grinders?
Shame... shame... shame...

Stitchawl

They have ceramic V's & wheels. I INSISTED on that feature. :D

Great to know I am not alone with the sharpmaker. I am gonna put in an order for the Dia-Fold kit that has the quad folds (so it has EE, E, F, C folds). I found the kit for 60 bucks on amazon with free shipping. The sharpmaker just doesnt seem to work great on M390, S30V. I actually had to use my worksharp to get the edge back on my ZT S30V (it didnt come very well from factory) that I f'ed up on the sharpmaker because at the time I didnt know what I was doing with it.

Did you get a Magna-guide with it? You'll want to add the X-coarse diafold with those to profile edges. I got them like you did and found an X-coarse diafold later. I'm glad I did for thinning out wide bevels on hard steel.

Congrats! It's really as easy as the video. He shows the magna guide and freehanding with the diafolds. I do mostly the 6 - 8 guick swipes per side by hand and I'll bet you end up doing it too.

I agree with CZIV re. the XC Diafold. In fact, I'm about to get the same Magna-Guide as you are on Amazon but with XC/C and F/EF diafolds instead. The way I see it, the XC/C will be for reprofiling and sharpening, while the F/EF will take the polishing as far as I'd want to go on diamonds (I hear polishing at the EEF grit level (~3 microns) is better suited to other abrassives like stones, ceramics, etc.) Once I'm done with the EF I'll finish on Sharpmaker fine whites (which actually aren't too much finer than EF from DMT) then strop. Hopefully I'll replace the Sharpmaker white ceramics with a decent waterstone or two at around the 2000 and 5000 grit levels when I get confident enough after practising on a budget Norton stone. Good luck with your Magna-Guide

After I read this post, and this one, I reconsidered what I just said about high grit finishes being better suited to waterstones and ceramics than to EEF diamonds. Too many variables, and does it really matter at that level anyway? Depends who you are.:)

deleted - pics wouldn't upload

The suspense is killing me! I order the Diafold kit, with the magna guide the aligner and so on. It has the EE, E, F, C diafolds. All diamond. I might order the XC later. I can reprofile on the WorkSharp for now...I believe it can handle that task well...at least I hope.

Everything I have read would state not to use the sharpmakers ceramic triangles after a regiment of diamond sharpening to finely hone and edge. I could be wrong but I dont think so. I would think you would be taking a step backwards. The EEF DMT is 8000 grit (3 micron) the sharpmakers fine white (not ultra fine) I believe aren't even close and are considerably coarser. But moreover the rods dont perform as well as diamond on steels such as D2, M390, S30V and other high grade steels. You could do diamond Spyderco rods but I really dont believe they are worth it.

I agree, I couldn't get this pic to upload from my PC maybe it will work from DMT's site. The only Sharpmaker stone you could squeeze in would be an ultrafine in the process but it's not necessary at all. I have all of the dia-folds except the silver & white ones which (white equals a white Sharpmaker stone UF). You wouldn't miss it. This'll give you an idea and you can save them to your PC folder and study on them for awhile. :)

And this comparitive chart posted awhile back compliments of unit.

No, I meant white ceramic after DMT extra fine intead of going to DMT extra-extra fine. But I realize that's not ideal. Waterstones make more sense than SM ceramic. And after reading a knifenut1013 post on the relative virtues of EEF diamonds I reconsidered even further. See? It was just four posts ago.:)

I agree with you if I'm understanding correctly. I wouldn't go to the SM UF ceramic between x-fine & (xx-fine 3 micron) dmt's. I don't see any need to. I have a strop loaded with 2 micron for that step, and a 1 micron strop to finish. I have a .5 micron strop but don't use it much. :)

DMT showed up today but I am out for a few days...wisdom teeth pulled! Viked up!

Vicodin for wisdom teeth extraction?!? Dang, you Americans and your drugs. I got a nice juicey script for ibuprofen when my wise ones got yanked.:grumpy:

Word to the wise: keep away from your knives until your meds are done.;)

Your just jealous...hahah. They were Impacted! Had to be put under for them. Moreover surgery was required. Surprisingly I am not in much pain...sick to my stomach but no pain. A little swollen and still lots of blood!
