Gathering coal while outdoors

When I was a kid we used to collect coal from rail road tracks near where we used to camp. I never tried to light it on it's own, but we'd just throw it in the camp fire to save on wood and to keep it going over night.

I don't think it smells too bad...
 
As already pointed mineral coal is different from charcoal. Coal often contains various nasty products, depends where it comes from but would never use it for open cooking.
