For the guys that make Bowies, should I harden and temper the gaurd and butt plate.I am working on a Bowie and they will be made of one of three metals , all carbon steel. 1084 and 1075 from Aldo or Leaf Spring that I salvaged from different cars and trucks.
Thanks Eddie

No. Use mild steel. Easier to work, and very adequate for the purpose.

Agree, I don't see any reason to harden these... Unless they plan to use the butt for hammering or the guard as a mini pry bar

No need to harden plain steel hardware like that.

If using damascus on the blade and hardware, hardening will give a better pattern match and etch.

Mild steel and wrought iron are two good hardware choices.

But what if you do indeed want to be able to hammer with the butt? For an upcoming project I was considering using Super Quench on 1018, since based on what I've read, that would get it somewhere around 45Rc. Does that make sense, or is it a waste of time?

I already have a bunch of hammers,so no i think it will just cut stuff. Thanks for your reply's.
